MSP Oil filter recommendations?

OK, silly topic, but I'm from the VW world where using a Fram filter was almost a sure bet that 1 in 5 would get you an oil buzzer (no valve in the Frams, and the VW's needed one). OEM filters (Mann, VW) were the ONLY things to use.

Any such wisdom for the Proteges? Or does the typical WalMart Fram do a fine job?

BTW, Fram makes a good filter, used them on another car that went 168k and NEVER burned oil, they just weren't good for VW's...

So... any recommendations? Or do I have to go back and waste more time getting to the end of that lo-ong thread in the "of topic" forum? (naughty)

STP oil filters...I highly recommend it. It's a Bosch that's rebadged. Has no paper so it won't deterioate. Also has a spring valve built in to aid oil pressure.

BTW, who else besides me would like to STRANGLE the engine designers who NEVER put the oil filter in a good place to replace? I go through some tin foil every time I change the oil - keeping drips off the engine/axles... but not off my arms...

Mazda OEM filters are quite well-built filters.

btw I STAY AWAY from Fram's, they are one of the worst constructed filter out there, as seen in this famous web page:

I stay away from STP not because the filters are bad but because I have to boycott them for putting out the gas additive (and me using it as a kid) until I found out I was actually just polluting my motor.

correct! And about 30% cheaper...

Personally I just use Purolator filters and will spring for the PureOne if it is on sale. They seem to function just fine.

try motorcraft, it's actually a couple dimes cheaper than a purolator premium plus

and it's got the PureOne filter element inside!

and no problem with oil pressure!

You're both right! I think they all do fine. Unfortunately -- as we have seen in the past -- filters from manufacturers do not stay the same forever. Look at Fram, their filters WERE fantastic. Now they have slipped in quality. And as smaller manufacturers (champion, etc) are bought out by larger folks (quaker state) or they choose to have their products made at the same crappy factory, once-good brand names now hide bad filters.

ugh and here I went and used a Fram Tough Guard. According to the study, just average. But with Mobil One, it should be fine. Car drove fine and oil looks great after what, about 25 miles...

Have to admit, I do like the easy grip outer, hope the inner does a good job!

Mazda makes some of the BEST OEM filters. If it's a Mazda, use the OEM filter.

Fram Tough Guard is supposedly the only decent Fram out there....I use it on my wife's Escort (PureOne on my P5, although I am going to try a SuperTech (Wally World) filter for a 626 V6 next change.

Bonus on the Fram Tough Guard - easy to remove...nice "rough" coating on the end

I'm using the OEM filter right now with regular oil, but I seem to remember reading that the Mobil 1 branded filter is very highly regarded. I plan to switch in a few thousand miles when I go synthetic.

I would, but all the dealers around here charge $8 for it so I use Bosch or PureOne, plus I hate going through this:

Me: Can I get a filter for a V6?
Dealer Parts Guy: What kind of car do you have?
Me: A Proteg 5.
DPG: That doesn't have a V6.
Me: I know.
DPG: You can't use that filter.
etc...etc
