Maff's STS2 Build

+1 STS2 Miata: (upyours)

i probably shouldn't be this excited about a car with this many miles on it. (alright)

Nice! There's no such thing as too much mazda! Congrats dude! Any more info?

And while we're here, I may as well post a little update.
It's like christmas. From various vendors (Mazdaspeed Motorsports, finishlineperformance, discoveryparts) I've got the following on the way / here:
Driver's side seat slider for Corbeau
Upper and lower shifter bushings
engine rear main seal
throwout bearing
pilot bearing
clutch
pressure plate
5 point g-force cam lock harness for driver's side (pull up lap, pull down shoulders)
4 point competition roll bar from Kirk racing.
4 alignment bolts for front control arms

I'm pretty sure that's it for now :D
These will all be installed in stages. All the drivetrain stuff is obviously gonna be at the same time. The seat slider (whenever I get it) will go on when I get time. The harness goes in after the roll bar (which has a 5 week wait on it).

that's a nice list.

well, it was an eBay purchase, and by far the biggest thing i've ever bought sight unseen. but the seller seems reputable, and the price wasn't bad ($2100) considering how much the ones i had been watching went for. '91 B package (post-shortnose); Mazda customer support confirmed it's got an LSD. forgot to ask about ABS.

high mileage (233k), and a few cosmetic pimples, but whatcha gonna do?

i'm hoping to go pick it up on Sat. basic maintenance (tune up, timing belt/water pump, fluids, etc), then a suspension and new shoes. time to make a shopping list.

With that kind of mileage I would test the LSD.

http://miata.net/garage/vlsd.html
"The shop manual states to test a VLSD you put a torque wrench on the hub (wheel in the air) and turn 90 degrees with 11 ft lbs of torque (car in gear). This should take no less than 4 seconds. If less then you have either an open diff or the VLSD is toast. Another test for a good VLSD is to jack up the rear with both rear wheels in the air. A good VLSD will turn both rear wheels in the same direction when manually turning the drive shaft. The open unit (or toasted VLSD) will turn the wheels in the opposite directions. There is no rebuild kit for the VLSD and the unit is completely sealed so you can't even get inside it short of cutting it"

that's on my list of things to do. i figured that with anything i was looking at (unless i was going to lay out $7,000+ for a super-low-mileage NA), that the VLSD would probably be worn out. this just makes it a little easier to swap in a working unit.

There was a wicked sweet CSP Miata at the last autocross on Sunday. Way fast too. He would have had FTD by almost a full second but he hit a cone...

Alright, not really a lot to update. I replaced my KCBHIW autoworks special seat bracket (basically an adaptor bracket b/w the seat and stock sliders) with a corbeau piece. I'm pretty happy with it now. They're built to really tight specs in an attempt to get them as low as possible for the Miata (as it's hard to gain any headroom in this car), so sometimes the fitment (as in mine) was a bit off. I had to flip the nuts/bolts that held the sliders on to the bracket because the nuts were interfering with the floorboard. After doing that, it was still a pain to get on, but it worked out in the end.

Also, I've ordered a 4 point competition roll bar from Kirk racing. Dealing with them has been great so far! Only problem is that my current seats will not fit with the bar (they don't really fit the Miata very well). I decided to stick with corbeau and I picked up a couple of Forzas to replace the Clubmans Clubmen?). Any1 want some mismatched seats for cheap? lol. These are reported to fit a lot better and give me the room to install the roll bar. Also, they're compatible w/ 5 point harnesses, they'll slide all they way back, and they're more upright for a better driving position (the back angle's abt 10* closer to 90* than the clubman). Currently, my passenger seat will only work w/ a 4 point.

And finally my last mod:

So much nicer than my current helmet, and lighter :D.

This weekend Rogue and I are driving @ the ATL region Novice school on Saturday, and will probably put a buttload of runs on the car. I hope she holds ;). That will help towards my 'modding the driver' goal lol. The school will be followed up with an autocross on Sunday.

And lastly, I may be changing my goals for the muffler setup. The supertrapp's on backorder @ summit and I can't find anyone else who has 'em in stock. The delivery date keeps getting pushed back, and I'm abt done w/ it. I'm probably going to do the same thing as originally planned but w/ a cheap Dynomax w/ a 90* downturn to keep exhaust off of some of the vitals (fuel lines come to mind 0.o). KCBHIW will probably be doing a similar set up with his 1.8 (he's already got the muffler, but w/ a full exhaust. He's probably gonna be chopping it up and seeing if it fits next week). Assuming it fits, I'll go w/ that, cuz they're way cheaper than the ST. In theory, it shouldn't be a problem (dimensions are very similar to the ST).

w00t update done! :p

Apparently I still had their old pages in cache. G-Force recently changed their website. Sorry bout that. Links should be fixed now.

hey you want me to see how much danny wants for his supertrapp i dont think we are putting it back on the mr2

Is it in good shape? I wouldn't mind, assuming it's the 2 1/4" inlet. It's gotta be less than $50, cuz that's how much a new dynomax costs lol
