Maff's STS2 Build

Baseline engine numbers

Well, it's official. The Miata is slow. Or at least weak, and I've got numbers to prove it! We had a dyno day today, so I took her out to get some baseline numbers before I start messing with stuff under hood.

The runs were on a DynaJet dyno, and I ran race wheels / tires (ATS Complite 15x7 13.5 lbs / 205/50-15 Falken Azenis RT-215) so I'd get relevant readings as to what it will do on track. You'll see 2 runs on the graph. 002 is my 2nd run on stock everything, the way the factory delivered her, +135k miles lol. 003 is my 3rd run where I detached the air meter from the stock air box, and just rested it on top. The fact that I gained 4.5 hp and 4.3 lb/ft by changing JUST that raised an eyebrow, and definately makes me more keen to looking into an intake in the very near future.

EDIT: Getting ahead of myself. Engine remains stock for this season! I said it at the very beginning, and I will hold myself to it. It'll be hard, but I'm gonna do it. Doesn't mean I can't pick up parts as they become available tho ;)

Lol, man leave me alone, I jsut got over the flu and kinda loopy cuz of my meds, lol....then again when am I not acting like a retard...just don't answer that please.....

Wayne, you have any guidlines for that? AFRs I should be shooting for? How much adjustment adds up to how much change, etc?

Hooray! It turns out that I'm NOT a complete retard! I know right? I never thought I'd get to say that one. APPARENTLY, there is a part number conflict of sorts with the sleeves for the NA Konis (which I don't have, but should), and the sleeves for NB Bilsteins (which I do have, but shouldn't). This past saturday, I tore down one of the suspension corners, and found that there was no way that the sleeves I had would fit the Koni's the way they were supposed to, so I got in touch w/ the retailer, and so far they're doing a great job of rectifying the situation. I should have the correct sleeves by this weekend. If I'm really damn freakin unbelievably lucky, I'll have everything sorted by then.

Really lucky.

On the plus side, I got a new toy today :D

Should make the tear down a lot quicker. Don't worry, it won't be used on the re-build ;)

Nice! I got one of those for Christmas, it might be the exact same one too actually. I haven't even used it yet!!! zomg :( I should just remove my lugs for shiggles. Oh well, soon enough.

Well, GC wouldn't send out new ones as it took so long to find the root cause (partially my fault, but I don't have a garage, so I can only work on her when I can borrow one), but Goodwin's sending me a set, supposedly out of his own stock. They should be here by Friday (UPS confirms that) So far his customer service has been 2nd to none, but I'm gonna reserve judgement until I get them and actually see them on the shocks, fitting properly lol.

Well at least they have been working with you pretty well. Just out of curiousity, how long have you been working on this build?

On and off since december. Since it's been cold, I basically have to wait for someone to volunteer a garage to work on her. I think this weekend, I'll even settle for a driveway if it's warm enough out (looks like it will be (thumb))

I would offer you my car port.....but you live kinda far. But yeah it is supposed to be pretty nice this weekend.

Well, the sleeves came in today :D So excited, they're actually the right ones! Going to my co-driver's place (Rogue) to tear everything down and put it all back together tomorrow. Wish me luck :D.

Oh, and for the record, actually having power steering fluid in the system helps A LOT!

Miatas don't need no stinkin' power steering!

Do you think having the proper sleeves on will change the stance?

Yes (they actually fit OVER the koni mounts. ie, the koni mount is about an inch into the sleeve) giving me a s*** load more adjustablity. Also, they're a good bit shorter, so my bumpstops will no longer be purely decorational lol

Forgot to mention: I changed my plugs the other night. To say the old ones were fried is a huge understatement. I couldn't even tell that they were V-Powers until I looked at the really closely and noticed a small notch in one of them... Anyway, that seems to have cured my 'cold engine' problems. It had a bunch of dead spots in the power band. You'd go through a gear, shift, and get back on the gas and for a few seconds it would just sit at the same RMP (WOT mind you) and then start winding up again. Same thing if you were cruising a long @ partial throttle then went WOT.

Hooray! Luke (Rogue) and I knocked out the suspension today. Completely tore everything down and put it together with the correct sleeves. Everything fits like a glove, and it handles great. The best part is that, OMG! I actually have useful bump stops! I'm really glad it does, cuz now I get to autocross her next weekend :D. The only thing we didn't remove was the sway bar, but the new endlinks did go on. They're about 1/2" shorter than stock. I'll see how I like 'em. Either way, they're better than the stock ones with rotten bushings. I'll get pics of everything uploaded later. The thing is so planted, I love it. I can't wait to see how it feels on course. Once again, I'm going to be testing with or without rear sway at the next event.

You've gotta love a simple suspension design. The whole thing only took us an hour and a half. Impact tools ftw!

Today, we went from this:

As you can see, there's a 'slight' difference between the NB Bilstein sleeves (on the left) and the NA Koni sleeves:

very nice :D. Hurray for non-useless bump stops!

looks the same lol. I need to pick up some NB spring hats to get a little extra travel in the rear, then I can drop it another 1" or so
