Looking to change wheels, need suggestions on rim size

I'm looking to change wheels b/c two of my stock 17's are bent.

How much offset is too much for 17" x 7" or 17" x 7.5"?

I believe stock is 52mm on the 5's. How would going as low as 40 affect ride/suspension, etc.?

I'm keeping same size tires- 205/50/17.

I haven't seen too many pics of 5's with, say, BBS with a little lip on 'em. Any help here?

Thanks.

I think 40 won't really look right, you'll be sticking out the fenders...I think I have a 48 and I don't like the way it looks (I have neg camber so it looks more flush) but at stock it probablysticks out like 1/2 inch, plus I trimed my fenders....sorry I can't check cus my car is in the states and I'm overseas right now...

min offset 45 (w/ negative camber) check out

you will have some idea what it will look like

I would have to agree with wmzda5, minimumum 45mm...if the factory ones are already something like 52.5mm...I was told that a mm is like a dime's width so if you would go 40 that would be pushing the wheel out 12.5 dime's width out towards your fender and depending on how wide the wheel is (at that offset honestly I wouldn't go past 7" wide) you would be cutting it close . Can it be done ...yeah anything is possible it's just finding the right combination of wheels and tires. When I got the 19's the offset was 48mm and the width was 8.5 inches and when I put the wheel on the car with no tire it stuck past the fender like 3/8 of an inch....but I knew for this to work I needed to stretch the tire so I went with 215/35 R19....would a 225 or 235 been better...yeah.. but I knew with how far the rim stuck out I'd probably run into problems with a wider tire. Hope this helps.

How would going as low as 40 affect ride/suspension, etc.?

Regardless of fit within the fenders, reducing offset changes the load on the suspension, to the detriment of long term reliability of bushings, etc. I'd stay as close to stock as possible.
