I'm Back...

I understand that, but in this case, I believe that their manifold design plays a big role in where they are getting their power from.

The MSP manifold isn't all that great I don't think. I'm willing to bet that the FM flows better, and Terry's flows better still.

The MSP has the same stock exhaust of the MP3, minus one catalytic converter...

I'm not so sure. I took a photo under the MSP at SEMA, and it looks to be a bigger midpipe. I'll post the picture shortly.

Hmmm, that would make sense that it would be different.

SCC was saying that it needed to be bigger because it was the MP3 exhaust set up. They said this in the recent test drive comapring some cars. It is in the thread Linux posted up above, I think.

Does anyone really know how the manifold design effects the power output? I'm sure it does, but to what degree? I guess the only way to tell is with a direct A-B comparison all factors being the same.

With Terry's setup being so different(Link, no cats, different exhaust etc...), to say its all the manifold is just speculation.

My gut tells me that at 5-6 PSI, a perfectly designed exhaust manifold is only good for a few more HP over the BEGI design. Probably with more PSI, and higher RPM a well designed tubular would show better gains. But at lower levels I think a design like the BEGI manifold would have better spool characteristics, which is of greater concern for the application. But again w/out A-B comparison, its all speculation.

I think the design of the MSP manifold was influenced by:

1. Packaging concerns
2. Longevity
3. Cost
4. Performance

As with the rest of the turbo kit. Efficiency wasn't the high priority.

I don't know...It looks pretty thick at that angle, you didn't happen to crawl under there with your calipers to measure??

With company's like Mazda its cost, cost, cost, cost and cost. Then they factor in cost.

I imagine it was very frustrating for Calleway to do that kit. You know if it was up to them things would have been different.

But then again, the cars cheap. So everything is a trade off. And if cars didn't have room to be modified we wouldn't be here. We'd be spending all our time in the "hot girl" thread.

The Mazdaspeed girls already thought I was a bit of a weirdo. Everyone else was sitting in the driver's seat and listening to the loud stereo.

Common' Keith! It would have been a good excuse to get a quick 'up skirt' shot. "I'm measuring the exhaust diameter....ummm, yeah."

If only you knew. We had some fun at the Protege show car photo session....

I'm sure thats what she thought he was going for.
Although I don't think asking her if she liked being spanked by air hoses help the case.:D

DOn't feel bad, I'm missing CES this year and my buddies had tickets to the AVNs.

Hey! This thread is supose to be about my blown engine damn it!!! HEHEHE! What the hell are you guys doing talking about the stinking MSP when my heart is broken in peices on my garage floor. :-P Just kidding guys! I was like damn look how many replies I got and then I started reading them and I was like WTF! But just as an update I will be putting my new engine into my car tomorrow and should be boosted and back on the road again by this weekend! Later!

LOL!!!....I noticed to Dave...good luck on the install (2nd round) :D

This thread went from 0-95+ posts in like a day!?!?!

Interesting discussion though...

lol... seriously.. i was just about to post about how this was supposed to be about your engine blowing... then u two beat me to it :p oh yah... BTW... didnt you say something about video.. i wanna see i wanna see!! atleast pictures... something man...

good luck on the drop in!

Man this thread took off!!
A few things I just wanted to mention before this thing dies out.
The J&S unit is an excellent unit. Big_ben did not blow up his car because of boost, Big_bens car is actually running, he just had the unfortunate luck of the oil line leaking. So the J&S had nothing to prevent because nothing blew.........also Ben never hooked up the J&S unit.

Regarding my car, its true that I have a piggy back that offers more accurate control however I am retarding timing with this unit also. So at 7psi a turboed mp3 is running the stock advanced timing. I am running retarded timing. This hurts power. If I were to advance my timing to back to stock mp3 or p5 levels (I am pulling out as much as 11 deg timing retard) I would get a LOT more power. Just for reference. I briefly ran against a turbomp3 equipped with our stage 1 kit set at 5psi and it kept up with me. It was not faster but that sucker ran. I do not reccommend running 5psi on a non-intercooled kit but this car in particular was at sea level, running good quality gas, plenty of fuel and at a nice nippy 70 degrees (this is cold by Miami standards)
Also pauls mp3 is running a slightly bigger experimental turbo on his car (turbine is bigger).....very nice indeed.....we will get his car on the dyno shortly but his car feels to be around 180whp in stage 1 trim!

One question about the J&S, I thought we covered last time, but just for clarification in this thread too. Does it use it's own source to detect knock or does it rely on the stock sensor already in place from Mazda, and you hack into the signal??

Also, I am working on getting a scan of the book that says what I am talking about with the 9 psi stuff. Hopefully, I will have it soon.
