If your 5 won't start, try this

:
2009 Mazda5 GT
Over the weekend my 5 would crank but not start. Battery was good and there were no codes. I was able to get it started my pumping the gas pedal a little bit during cranking. It hesitated a bit but after a few seconds it started. It idled a little rough for a few seconds but it's been ok since then. Anyone else have this happend to them? If this ever happens to you, give this a try and it just might work!

Did you get the battery tested to be sure it is good? It could be a good but still weak battery "crank but not start". If it is original and given the recent spate of cold temp and your location, it could be on it's way out. Not that this is a straight comparison but my '08 battery died last year. If original, I'd suggest getting it tested or better yet invest in a new battery now before you get stranded.

Also, pumping the gas pedal on a fuel inject car does noting unlike old carb'd engines. You are better off just turning the key to "on" for a few secs and let the fuel system pressurize (you should be able to hear it) and try to start it again.

Mine wouldn't start (after sitting outside for 7-8 days in below zero weather) recently. I ended up jump-starting it, it took a LONG time cranking but eventually it fired up. Oh yeah, my battery charger said "Fully charged" but when I took the actual battery to the battery store, it wasn't really charged full up. It was a cheap-ish battery from Walmart from 3-4 years ago, and it's shot already... just get a "good" battery instead of saving $.
