IIRC the Velocity Red Mica paint is more than just paint and clear, I think there is a pearl coat in there too to give it that sheen.

You are correct, it's a tricoat process.

Velocity Red Mica Tricoat (27A)

This is a special paint application consisting of three different layers of paint. It gives the vehicle a milky pearl effect and can be quite striking to look at. This paint requires three different coats of paint. The first is a basecoat of color. Next a second coat of transparent color, called the midcoat is applied and finally, a coat of clearcoat. The midcoat color is applied very thin and adds additional depth to the paint.

Nick @ FMW pretty much guaranteed it wouldn't be done until early next week. I'll call Thursday afternoon or Friday morning to see how things are going. Hopefully I'll have it in time for the spring cleaning meet.

I stopped at Enterprise today and swapped my PT Cruiser for a Chevy Malibu. It smells better but still confirms my thoughts about American cars. What ever happened to nice cushy seats? There is just something about the padding in these cars that is completely unforgiving.

I'm trying to come up with some alternatives to the RX8 rims since I was thinking about selling mine (with tires) to Dan. I haven't seen any wheels in the price range that I paid before and I can't see paying more...so I might as well go aftermarket. My goal is to find something that is showy, but not too crazy. I started a new thread if you want to see the other wheels I came up with...

What ever happened to nice cushy seats? There is just something about the padding in these cars that is completely unforgiving.

They went from sofa style to hard styrofoam. Tempurpedic needs to step into the automotive industry if they have not already.

I agree. I think it might be to increase "cargo capacity" and "passenger room" numbers for internet shoppers. If you have a narrow cushion it leaves more volume in the car and provides more leg room for the rear passengers. Take a look at an 80's caddy bench seat. It is like 12" thick. Your average mid-sized sedan now has seats that are about 2" thick.

Car was finished today but Nick @ FMW took one look at it and told them it wasn't good enough for him to release it to me. They're gonna repaint it again. He said he'll hopefully have it done tues-weds of next week

Well, at least Nick saved me going down there and telling them the same thing. Kudos to him. ...but I'll save my review of FMW until they are finished.

My anxiety level about this whole thing is beginning to rise. If they can't get it right the first time...what are the odds of them getting it right the second? ...and if they can't get it right, what do I do?

They can get it right, don't worry. Clearly the worker working on your car didn't understand how much it needed to be perfect. It's the same crap I dealt with, except that I had to fight and was met with lots of resistance from the body shop I dealt with. As soon as the manager actually took a look at the car, they were shocked that they let it out looking so horrible.

It could be something as simple as a weird defect in the clearcoat.. kinda like how these pictures are my car with the same crap paint job, just in different lighting conditions:

they might just not have noticed some paint issue in the lighting inside the shop or in sunlight, but then managed to catch a glimpse of the car at night and saw it.

I think that is exactly it. They probably pulled it outside in the current overcast rainy weather and without the mirror like reflections of the clear coat, the true red color showed through and obviously didn't match. At least that is what I am speculating happpened.

A "Tri-Coat" system ("T/C, as it is known in the industry) involves the application of a couple of coats of clear paint over a so-called "glamour" tint coat (usually involving the new mica "pearl" powders sometimes mixed in a colored toner) which is, in turn, applied over a complimentary high-solid base color (in a color matching the tint coat) that is, of course, applied over the primer/sealer. Typically, this system would be applied like this: primer/sealer, white "high-solid" underbase, white (mica) pearl, clear top coat. The system is used sometimes by auto manufacturers on upper line cars; the half-decade old Cadillac Allante used this system when the pearl white was applied. This tri-coat system depends upon the uniform application of the "color coat"
