and that's all I have to say about that.

Don't respond telling me how much this sucks...I already know that. Instead, tell me the best place to go to get my Velocity Red looking like this never happened. At first glance I'll need a whole new bumper cover...I'm not sure what they can do about the trunk. Oh and the keyless entry button on the trunk doesn't work anymore.

There must be a decent body shop in the Boston area.

I know of a few places in CT and a place in Rochester to seriously avoid but that doesn't help much.

chuyler, clearly this was beacuse your car was silver, and blended right into the road...

Oh wait. Your car is bright freaking red? How did this happen?

I think Bazooka Joe and Altspace know a few good shops

Dicks Auto in Rutland...It's the only place I have my work done...I work in insurance and have seen alot of repaired vehicles in the central MA area...this is the only place that I will have work done. Everyone I have referred there walks away happy.

What exactly happened? Was it a hit and run? Did someone rear you in a parking lot?

Sorry, wish I knew of body shops in your area. Some insurance companies have recommended lists that guarantee their work. It does not appear to be major damage. Someone hit you at a stop light or did you stop short?

I sympathize though. Within 2 months of owning my brand new Civic I had both the front and rear bumpers replaced.

oh s*** that sucks!

for the keyless entry, maybe something got disconnected in the trunk? or maybe a short? You might be able to just pop a panel up and check the connections.

your ins co is going to reccommend where you go, and they won't stand behind the work unless you go to one of those shops...that said, that sucks chris...let me know if you need any help...i do have a good body shop down my way...:(

Carol's Auto Body in Norwood is really good. Took my P5 there twice and they did the work so you couldn't tell anything was done. Several of my coworkers have gone there as well and like them.
At least no one was hurt Chris.
Edit- You can take your car where ever you want. The insurance co. can't make you go anywhere you don't want.

Thanks Oleg, I needed a good laugh.

So now that I've had a relaxing weekend to cool down about this. Here's what happened.

First, off it was less than a mile from my home (typical). Amanda and I were heading down Route 109 west on our way to visit friends at UMass Amherst. We came up to a line of 3 cars at a traffic light and the light turned green but no one was moving. I took my foot off the brake and started rolling forward but then had to stop again. I waited about 3 seconds and then the car in front of me started moving so I took my foot off the brake. About 1 second later, POP! I got hit from behind. I've been rear ended before but this one really jolted us. Probaby would have been worse if my foot was on the brake. I look in the rear view mirror and it is a 40 something man in a Chrysler Town & Country. I suspect he was going at least 10-15 mph, maybe more. I pull into the next parking lot while Amanda calls the Millis police. We made sure everyone was alright and then the guy apologized and said "I'm sorry but with the red car I guess I didn't see your brake lights". I thought to myself, "because I was rolling at the time" but kept that to myself. I don't recall that he was talking on his cell or anything so I don't quite know what he could have been doing other than staring at my soon to be not so gorgeous car. The chrysler bumper was scuffed and dented. My bumper is cracked, the faux tail pipe on the left side was dangling from the exhaust pipe and the lower bumper is very broken. The lights look OK but there is a scuff as seen in the photos on the trunk and it also looks dented in a little. Quarter panels look fine and the trunk closes. The keyless entry worked today so maybe that was just a fluke the other day when it wouldn't open. I didn't see any dents on the actual muffler tip so I don't think he push the bumper in enough to hit it.

So I'm looking at a whole new bumper assembly and possibly a new trunk lid. I'm sure most body shops can do a good job...but I don't want to end up with a paint mis-match like Chris (Kansei). The Velocity Red color is pretty intense and if it doesn't match perfectly....I'm going to complain to high heaven. I'm sure eventually I'll get it looking new again...but won't this taint my carfax report and come back to haunt me at resale time? The police didn't record an accident report but it will go into their log just incase there is a problem with the claim.

It just pisses me off that people can't keep their eyes on the road. I'm sure the guy saw me...then looked away (at the radio, a passer by, a phone, who knows) and in that amount of time I changed speed and the hit probably surprised him as much as it did me. No screeching brakes/tires were heard.

Yes, join the club of "wait, you're going to give me HOW MUCH for my car?????" reactions at trade-in time :'( :'(

no screeching tires means he didn't even try to avoid hitting you, that's 100% fault right there. Hopefully the MA laws treat you better than the horrible, backwards NY laws have been to me so far.

JUST DON'T TAKE THE CAR TO VOGEL'S COLLISION IN ROCHESTER, no matter how much you may be tempted to. I don't care what anyone says :)

Maybe make a deal with the guys in the service department at the local Mazda dealer to find a velocity red MS6 with a production date as close to yours as possible and swap parts, then have that one repainted? Shady as all hell but then you'd have OEM-matched paint for sure.

They say things happen in threes. Who is the next NEPOCer to have their car ruined by some douchebag not in control of their own car?

In threes is right.

My mom drove into my dad at the end of their street. Her camry needs a new hood, bumper, and light. My dad's truck needs the bumper re-aligned. Don't ask ok...its my mom.

Amanda stalled during that horrible ice/slush/snow storm and the car rolled backwards and a sign scratched the rear driver's side door of the Protege5 and put some pretty good scuffs in the rest of the panels on that side of the car.

Now this.

And a day or two after my accident, my roommate was a victim of a hit and run.. but he couldn't call in the guy because his car (and license plate) was conveniently covered in snow.

Chris, the OEM bumper may come pre-painted from the factory. For example, for the RX-8, the bumpers come pre-painted in many colors, but not all (like Whitewater Pearl).

Second of all, try going with either of the shops that were recommended here. Seems like Canecreekfreak's suggestion would be the best for you. If for some reason you want to go with a "guaranteed" shop from the insurance company's list, then I think that would be OK too, because given that your car is so new, you can demand "exactly like new" repair. It seems that there is just no excuse that they can use for less than perfect or anything non-OEM (in my opinion... I am not an expert on this at all). Typical excuses are car over 2 years old or over 12K miles. Yours is neither.

How bad is the damage on Amanda's car? Maybe I can buff a lot of it out.

That is only if they purchase a Mazda OEM bumper cover. Many go the inexpensive route with a knockoff.

Canecreekfreak is correct, you most likely can take your car to any autobody, but again if the place is not part of the insurance companies network then that work is not guaranteed. From my experience anyway.

damn dude. Sorry to hear.
You should do what i did when my bumper was hit that badly.. i went to NH and got a new car... lol
i suppose that is not a real option...

What happened to the no cursing on thread titles?? Anyways you risk getting into an accident everytime you go out on the road. That is fact. Sorry man and I can't stand stupid drivers but it is unavoidable. The risk we all have to take as drivers on the road.

you got one thing going for you....new car, no paint fade...new car ins co should replace with oem parts...you should be fine...i'm glad to hear amanda was alright! oh and you too chris!! :)

Thanks guys, I will ask about an OEM pre-painted bumper cover. Do you think they would also have a trunk lid?

Oleg, I'll show you the scratches on the Protege5 at the spring cleaning meet (or sooner). I'm sure some of them can be buffed out but rear door needs touch-up paint at the very least...but for it to look flawless the whole panel will have to be painted.
