Mazda Protege 5
hello to all i bid you hello! Im new to this forum. i bought my protege 5 3 years ago and fell in love. ive done many mods. but now i ran in to a serious problem. my reverse pops out and i have a few questions. first witch trannys would have the same internals ive heard they been using the same trannys in a bunch or cars( Ford probe, MX3, 636, anything from 1993 till 2002 almost). that being said i know the reverse gearing is very easy to get to and was planning to rebiuld the transmission on the car would this be possible and if so what transmissions would work since proteges seem to be quite rare here in reno. Thank you all:)

I would recommend having a tranny shop look at it - 'popping out of gear' is usually a first symptom of a worn clutch... Have it looked at before sourcing a new tranny...

the cluch was replaced along with a re manufactured fs block From protegegarage at 80.000 miles. i have 120 now Thanks for all the help! i will have to post a build thread and spome pics of my P5! but for now here is one pic http://tinypic.com/r/eec1u/5 Have a nice day!

found this on a probe forum (It is not a synchro problem, synchros only help you engage the gear (synchronize the gears so that they mesh when engaged).

Odds are you are low on gear oil. However, if this is not the case I would check for a bent shift linkage, or worn shift bushings. Perhaps it's not actually going into reverse fully. If you have alot of play in your shifter, this is likely the cause....

Also, if you have very worn motor mounts, or the transmission support arm isn't installed, the engine and transmission will rock/rotate forward alot when you let out the clutch (and apply a load), causing the gear to pop out.

Thank you all for your speedy reply's, as for the motor mounts Im a CNC machinist so I made Solid aluminum motor mounts because i was tired of replacing them the car rattles a bit but it was sure worth it! the oil is next but im quite sure a tooth is missing from one of my reverse gears as it will engage all the way move the car back 3 or so feet pop out and repeat also i have replaced all shift bushings with corksport stuff all five driving gears feel smooth as silk the solid aluminum motormounts really brought the car to life, and i was not aware thar reverse has a syncro but thats why im here!
