Ok, so it's not my MSP but my other car project, so the mods can move this if they need/want to. The background is I swapped a CA18DET engine into my 87 Nissan Pulsar which originally had a CA16DE engine. The swap is straightforward, but nothing ever goes 100% smoothly.
The battery in the car is dead so I have to jump it to try and start it.
I get 13.7 ish volts at the battery.
Crank the car I sometimes hear a pop and lose the jump connection and I need to reset the clamps.
Cranking the engine, it tries to turn over and coughs a few times, acts like it is going to start, but when I release the key (from Start to On position), everything stops.
Disconnect the jump cables and the voltage in the battery drops about 0.1 volts per second, runs down to about 3.8 volts and sits there.
I've got resistance between the negative terminal and: chassis near battery, transmission, intake manifold, chassis on passenger side.
So, what could be sucking the life out of the battery? Could this problem be preventing the car from starting? How do I diagnose the problem?
If anyone's curious, you can find the build thread here.
