Hello all and I need your expertise - AT ?

All,
I'm glad to finally have signed up as a member. Although I regularly check out the forums as a guest, a problem with the car has prompted me to finally register. I have a silver 07 Mazda5 Sport with about 40 thousand miles. We love the car. Its mostly my wife's driver. Anyway, yesterday (for the first time) we couldn't move the shifter (automatic) in the shifting gate from Park.

Yup, foot was on the brake peddle. After turning the engine off and restarting, the problem was gone however the same thing occurred one more time later in the day.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the cause before I head into the dealer?

Apologies if this topic has already been posted before. I'm new to searching the threads so if someone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Manual says there is a solenoid in the shift mechanism that
triggers when you press brake pedal with key in the On position.
I think you should hear at least a faint 'click' or something around the shifter
area when the solenoid activates. If not then it can be an electrical connection.

SHIFT-LOCK SYSTEM OUTLINE

• The shift-lock system prevents the selector lever from being shifted out of Park unless the brake pedal is
depressed when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.
• The shift-lock can be released manually by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the shift-lock release hole.

hope these helps:

My Subie began to experience similar symptoms - turned out I was beginning to press the brake simultaneously while trying to shift out of park. The electrics didn't like that and said "No Way!" As soon as I lifted up and pressed the brake pedal, then waited near a second to shift, it was fine.

Some of you might have seen it already, this is from another forum (credit goes to sdmazda5):

I just had this issue last week and had it repaired. It in fact was the brake switch.

Part #BN7N-66-490. It's like a $20 part.

The dealership covered mine under warranty (after much hassle). Even if I were to pay for them to fix it, it would have been about $120.

Just make sure that the switch gets adjusted properly. Mine was not adjusted properly & caused the brakes to lock up severely.

Good luck.
