Mazdaspeed Protege 03.5, stock
what's up mazdas247! i've been reading the forums on here for a while now and just decided to join up today. i've been pondering lately things i could be doing with my msp (all stock) that is relatively inexpensive, and would make me enjoy my car a little more. i'm still in college (1st year of my 2 year automotive program) and so spending on the big stuff-- like a fmic-- isn't necessarily do-able right now. but i figured you guys would know a few things i could do, i'm open to ideas. you all probably know more about my car than i do, i'm eager to learn! thanks for reading. btw mazda ftw (idhitit)

up to $100. i read something on here before about someone raising the shifter up a little by disassembling the case, and then use a rubber mallet to bump the base of the shifter up. i guess the 03 msp has a higher one, but for the 03.5 (to make it a "short" shifter) mazda just took the same shifter and lowered it down more in the case. i'd personally like mine to be up a little more so it's closer to the steering wheel. as long as this is safe i'd do it. things like that, just simple modifications. i'm still deciding whether or not i want to keep my msp and mod it, or switch to a different platform in a year. so little things for now

lol i've thought about that, but i don't think it'd work in the long run. i could spend more, it depends on what the upgrade is and what the benefit is. i already think i want to get a turbo-timer. sitting in my car and letting it cool down for at least a half a minute every time i arrive somewhere is getting old

not much you can do with 100 bucks. Maybe some shifter bushings, new swaybar bushings or something like that. Since you are still in college and 100 bucks is you budget for now. I wouldn't do any performance mods other than little things like I mentioned otherwise you may be stuck one day. Usually once you start modding these cars, problems start popping up. The last thing you want is major car problems while you are in school.

turbo timers on our car is more like just a bling factor. Our turbos are water cooled so we don't need turbo timers. Also, I think they are a must on journal bearing turbos but ours are ball bearing. Don't get me wrong, I have one, but I sort of forget about it most of the time.

SSAFC. Look for them in the classifieds. I got mine for $200 shipped. Of course I had to keep my eye out for it every day, and I got version 1 (w/o datalogging). But a wideband would be highly recommended before that.

so tranny mounts and shifter bushings? sounds like that would make the whole drive-ability factor a lot more enjoyable! exactly the kind of things i wanted to hear about. and no go on the turbo timer? that doesn't mean that i still shouldn't let it sit after a hard run though, right? i tend to always smell a sort of burnt coolant aroma after a drive, i always figured that was from either, 1-our insufficient intercoolers, or 2- the previous owner before me not letting the car idle after a drive. but i think that would cause bearing isues in the turbo due to coking?

Front MOTOR mount is what he's talking about. I highly doubt the transmission mount is bad. That's the ONLY mount I've not replaced on any of my Proteges.

I replaced all four of mine. Even though my transmission mount was the only one fully intact.

Though I've had good luck with who you mentioned, others have not. I dealt with Protege Garage once, but that didn't go so well. You can buy the mount directly from AWR. That's what I would do.

Look at corksport for the shifter bushings, and if your shifter is really bothering you being too short id gladly trade you for mine :)and even throw a few buucks your way to increase your budget a little!
