Thanks for everyone's advice, we are going to wait and see how much it costs to ship. We think our car is worth about $9,000 if we are lucky and we also need to sell it here quite quickly before the end of June. This would give us around EUROS 6,600 towards buying a car in France. To replace it an automatic 2006 Mazda 5 is currently selling for around EUROS 12,000 - 15,000 with similar mileage so we thinking it is worth the hastle as long as there are no major hidden problems like not being able to get parts, different engines, or different oil or petrol needs etc? Does anyone else know if there is anything fundamentally different between the cars here and Europe? My wife thinks that there is because here they change oil every 3 months but when we lived in Europe we rarely had an oil change. I don't believe there are any differences but she wants some reassurance that the car will run on French petrol with French oil!! Thanks for the advice so far, very interesting. Sounds like we may be the only ones with a 2.3 litre auto Mazda 5 in France...!
its scary that you know basically nothing about this
not only are there heavy taxes on the initial import, there's also special taxes to deal with afterwards in europe... I know that much
the headlights are going to have to be changed as they do not comply with european regulations, you might be able to get the authorities to accept the tail lights, but you may have to change them also... this can be easily $2000 in brand new parts
you'll then have to remember that there will be NO support from mazda over there, and obviously NO warranty for your car.... resell value will also suffer because it is not any special car
it really doesn't make sense to own any US spec mazda in europe since what they have to offer is usually better as mentioned by someone else... and why in the world would you want automatic and a 2.3l? gas is extremely expensive there and the crappy 23mpg you get at best is going to kill your wallet fast
but gas is gas and the car will run fine over there, and the oil they use is higher quality (as required by regulations) so that is why you can go longer without oil changes... that doesn't mean we can't do the same here, it's just that most of the oil you find here is crap and only the few good ones to get takes an informed buyer... even then, their climate is a lot more mild than north america's and it goes a long way for oil life!
if you like the 5 that much, buy one there and don't even think of getting an auto as you'll get laughed at and it's only going to hurt you financially... and besides, unlike the US, there's plenty of other mini-minivans choices over there... good choices that might make you rethink owning a 5
