This is the e-mail I sent to Rock Auto. What do you guys think. Have any of you successfully installed this "Canadian" EGR on a P5.

I've noticed that the list of EGR's offered for the 2002 Mazda Protege 5 does not include the "Canadian" version with the coolant lines attached. Our cars are notorious for EGR problems and the guys on the forums recommend this EGR for a replacement.

FSY1 18 W00

This product lists itself to be used for 1999-2003 Protege but isn't listed as an option in the 2002-2003 Protege 5 product search. I think listing this as an option for a P5 would help out a lot of people.

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your interest in our products. According to standard motor products (the manufacturer of that EGR valve) it will not fit on a 2002 Protege 5. I cannot say why you found information indicating otherwise, but you can certainly still order it from our website using the part number search feature, but we cannot guarantee that it will fit on your vehicle.

Thank you,

Andrew S.

This is the Canadian EGR I personally bought from Rock Auto and had installed by a mechanic
It corrected my stuttering and idle hesitation problems as soon as I replaced it.

I had replaced the wires and coils prior as well, just an FYI

I am from Canada but order a lot from Rock Auto (American). That "Canadian" EGR is available from Rock Auto but isn't listed under the P5 search.

It looks like both Rock Auto and even the manufacturer are misinformed. The EGR with coolant lines does indeed fit our cars (P5). I have been lucky so far and haven`t needed to do a replacement yet and just wanted to make sure this version fits.

I found that link from another guy who was having EGR issues and I decided to nip this in the bud and do some deeper research. I didn't even know about fact that it wasn't listed in either the supplier or manufacturer of the EGR for MP5's and just decided to order it. My mechanic didn't say anything different and my car has been running perfectly since I've made the repair. :)

I'd say go ahead and order it - coming from someone who has bought and done the repair..

Cool, thanks for the confirmation. I don't need to do it yet as I have no problems and do a seafoam regularly which I think may help clean the EGR and my last smog test gave almost unreadable measurements, maybe better than new but after saying all that I`m sure it will fail shortly. Knock on wood.

No I`m pretty sure it was sold in Canada, that`s where I bought it. I think they are all the same in North America and they were all built in Japan. The little Canadian and American flags show up on every part I have looked up on Rock Auto indicating that all the parts are the same for both of our countries.

The EGR had problems from the start but I guess it was worse here in Canada so a version was introduced to the Canadian market first and only available here for a while. It was then referred to as the `Canadian` version and you guys in the US had to order it through Canada just to get one. It is readily available every where now but is still referred to as the `Canadian`version. My EGR is original and the update was only introduced many years after the P5 hit the market, so I still have the crappy one. The link from Bikingpro5 above covers most of those issues.

Here`s the latest response from Rock Auto:

Dear Paul,

Thanks a lot, and I am glad the part worked out for you! We will be sure to check with our suppliers to make sure we list this for every vehicle it fits, including that Protege 5. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

Thank you,

Joseph

Sounds good bud, don't forget to get back to this thread and update us on what you end up doing!

I've got no plans for any work right now but I'm working on a shopping list for Rock auto. My list so far includes, Fuel pump housing, Ign. coils, Plugs, Wires, Gas cap, Headlights (bulbs), EGR valve, PCV valve, Driver's side Parking brake cable, Oil & Air filters, Wiper blades and maybe Front and Rear bearing (hub assembly) and Ball joints (control arms). A single combined order keeps the shipping cost down. (heavy stuff really puts the cost up,... no rotors for me,... not worth the shipping).

The Canadian Egr mod is completely compatible with US models. Not only did I put one one my personal P5 several years ago and have not had the random misfire/low idle BS that the US Egr valves caused, but I have installed the canadian variant on several of my customer's P5's to correct the same issue over the years and not one has come back with a problem. For some reason the canadian version is also cheaper, even with the extra cooling lines and such, go figure.

The engine is the same on Canadian and US P5s and sedans (2.0L) The EGR will have no issues mounting to any of these vehicles.
