Does your MSP do this?

Mine, 1250 miles on it now, makes a horrible screeching sound when the turbo spools around 4200 rpms and then on up. I've heard lots of turbo's before, but only 2 made this noise...right before they started blowing smoke.

If you can imagine a large machine drilling into a peice of metal without any lube, thats the sound its making. I called Mazda, they said to bring it next week...and just drive it till then.

Mine just recently started making this noise. But When I apply the brakes It goes away, I thought it might not be coming from the turbo , but from the brake pads rubbing. Any suggestions?

Spicy,

You might have gotten a pebble or something stuck inbetween the brake pad and the rotor. It will make a noise when the brakes are applied. Try to see if there is somethign int he way.

Hope this helps

thanks I will check.
But as I said before, the noise goes away when I apply the brakes.

I've been getting that too but like brennan said, only at high rpms. Everyone says it's normal. But eventually, I'll probably bug my dealer about it.

It is the turbo screeming, I have the same thing, No problem, most turbos do this at high Rpms.

None of the turbo cars I have ever owned did this. And since I put my home made CAI on, I can hear it spool up better, and hear the bypass valve open more clearly. My turbo certainly doesn't make a "horrible screeching sound" when in spools up around 4200rpm, it's fairly quiet actually.

I had a thread about this last week. It seems that everone's turbo whine gets significantly louder in the upper RPM's.

N1XRR, can you hear it with the windows closed?

Spicy, do you use your right foot to brake? If so, the screaming turbo will stop as soon as you let off the gas pedal to go hit the brakes.

spicy, there's a known problem with all protege's with the brakes where they start squealling ( spelling?). It almost sounds like a rock caught in the wheel but it isn't. Might happen more when brakes are warm ( expanded due to heat ) maybe after hard driving, or going down hills? Hit the brakes and it goes away, or turn left or right and it kinda goes away? My mp3 did this. They took the brakes off, shaved the pads or rotors ( can't remember which one) just slightly, and put them back. Basically, I think it's the rotors have a "rough" spot and that's what making the noise.

I'm no mechanic, but that's what I was told. Anyways, only took a few mins to fix. Mine was the back passenger wheel.

Never came back again, and it's been near a year now.

mine does it around 3700 rpm and I only just noticed it after the intake was put on. I think it is definitely the turbo, and it does not sound good:(

mine whines (as it whined from day one) after 3500 rpm under hard acceleration.
- 3260 miles on it now

Mine has always made a whisling sound at 4k+...this is in addition to that sound. It comes and goes, but is NOT the normal turbo sound. I have owned several other turbo cars, none of mine have done this, only a few friends of mine. I talked to both about it, plus Greg Burns, sounds like oil starvation at the turbo.

Yes, I can hear it with the windows up...actually, better with the windows up. Or, would that be worse? Well, its louder with the windows up...the screeching that is.

Yup, I have this sound also. It doesn't sound like turbo whine at all. Mine was most noticeable on a long expressway run at cruising speed (not hard accelleration). I couldn't figure out what the heck it was but it remained for almost 20 minutes and then was gone again.

??

I too was under the impression that this was the "scream" from the ball-bearing turbo at high boost?

I only notice it at all if I'm on it HARD - it starts prob 4500 or so and increases in volume w/ RPMs. It doesn't happen ANY other time.
