What are the symtoms to look for when the clutch needs replacement? About what mileage should this occur? I bought a 2002 with 11,500 mi on it, and in the 3 mo I've had it I've put 6000 miles on it. Is it time for a new clutch? How much do they run?

Thanx.

Moderator, please move to "Protege 5" forum. I posted in the wrong forum.

Thanx

Well it's not really a milage thing. It just depends on how well you can drive a stick. Normally signs to replace it are a lot of shaking when your starting off or if you have to feather the clutch a lot to get going meaning it's not a quick rev rev and your gone. Hope that helps.

Yeah, unless you really abuse the clutch, it should last for 100K+ miles without any troubles. You will know when it starts to go bad. When the clutch wears out, the engine will "free-rev", when driving. When the clutch is engaged and you step on the gas, if the engine revs up but the car doesn't gain any significant speed, your clutch is probably shot. Also, like PA_MP3_Man said, if your clutch slips really bad during a launch, it's probably time for a new one. I had a clutch last me about 105K miles in my RX7 before it started to give up the ghost. I also used to autocross and drag race it periodically.

the reason I asked is because, sometimes, when in reverse it seems to skip.

I doubt it is letting go yet...It would be slipping in your forward gears as well...

My 1990 Protege LX's clutch lasted to ~120,000 miles, most while enduring my horrible AutoX technique... lol

You havn't told us the symptoms. If you tell us what it's doing aside from "skipping" we can tell you if it's related to the TSB or not.
