clutch questions

I tried to do a search but nothing really came up.

Well I have let a few people who drive stick and have driven longer and they thought that the clutch was weird, like it grabbed really close to the top and it was hard to shift really smooth. My sister also thought the same thing, she learned in a jetta and was like what is going on with your clutch and she said it seems like it grabs at almost the end of travel and there is no inbetween. I kinda feel the same way, is this normal?

Also is there a way to make it so I do not have to push the clutch in the whole way to shift?

About all I can tell you is that I agree, my clutch also seems like it doesn't grab until close to the "top" (fully out). I don't know why - it was like that from day 1. It doesn't bother me personally but there I times it worries me that my clutch is going to hell -- which should be impossible after just 5000 easy miles. As far as the shifting action you mention - that I don't experience. This is the smoothest shifter I've ever driven (smoother than my previous ES model by a mile).

Just to give you soem hope if no real info, SCC did a write up about a kit that did just that with the clutch. My MP3's clutcxh was grabby to and it lessened over time. The P5 on the other hand was real easy to use right form the start.

Different cars have different clutches and different trannys. It just really depends on what you drive. Other cars you can't feel the power come to the clutch as much, but I don't think that it's impossible to be smooth with it.

After going away on vacation for 3 weeks and driving VWs I came back and was releasing the clutch really fast and just being real jumpy with my shifts. I had to sort of relearn the feel of my clutch and tranny.

So, there's nothing wrong, you just have to get used to it. If you're curious about where it really catches just put it in 1st gear on a flat surface and let the clutch off slowly and notice when it catches.

Push in all the way if you don't want to grind gears, it's just the way clutches work. If it needed to be pushed in less then they would make the pedal stop earlier.

I can shift pretty smooth now, but could not at first. I was just asking about not having to push it in all the way becuase on my friends jetta you push it in 3 inches and can shift.

Ah it's that thin spinny thing that grabs another more substantial spinny thing and then makes some tooth covered round things move in around to turn some twisty sticks that move your wheels right?
Also there is a small varmit of some variety that runs circles and coughs @ 3000rpm it's like a mild achoo for some and a mighty WHOOPING COUGH YOU MOTHER FUCKERS for others.
His name is pulsey or mabye Hesitwinkles...

I guess our drivetrain is much more "personal" and "precise" :D

I drove an 1.8T Jetta and though it is faster and has turbo I still have more fun driving my car because of little things like this - the feel of the interaction with the car.

edit: and yes, I have driven a 2003.5 MSP so I know how the clutch feels - nice and stiff, yum!

all i know is that i rev the engine too high before releasing the clutch fully...

then again, what the hell do i know, right? :(

Sure you could attend an all night LAN session and have some BBQ for free even.

I got a ACT 6 puck with a unsprung hub and HD pressure plate and it also grabs really high. Sometimes I also feel like the clutch is going to s***. When I drive hard it grabs like it supposed too. My civic on the other hand had a CM stage 4 and it grabbed real low.
