I have a 99 protege with the 1.8 and the auto tranny I would like to pull the drain plug and get what fluid out that I can does anyone know the amount of fluid the pan holds? A full empty tranny fill is like 7.6 quarts? I just want a simple pull the plug and refill amount. I'm not flushing either any help greatly appreciated I'd rather not have this process go wrong so I came for your help, thanks

if its not broke dont fix it. lol sorry about the sarcasm.. it should just be a single bolt to drain on the underside of tranny and there should be a fill hole toward the front of the car.. not sure cause i have a m/t protege google it to make sure though or use the search feature on here

it shouldnt really be hard to find, and the specs on how much fluid it takes should be in the owners manual

Well I'm a jeep guy myself but I love my protege but a fill plug on the side I believe that's for manual trannys only? My Cherokee takes 4 qts in the pan so I'm bettin the mazda takes 2 or 3 I've tried searching I found nothing

Owners manual states 7.6 us quarts for transmission fill I just wanna know how much the pan holds you can't get fluid out of the converter unless you flush it so there's no need for 7.6 nobody has ever done just a drain and fill here. If I have to I'll just drain it in a pan and see how many quart bottles I can fill.

I have the same question. I changed the filter last night and overfilled it when I was finished because the manual says 7.6 qts. I can tell you I measured the used fluid and it was about 4.5 qts. My suggestion would be to put 4 qts in and check the level. Add as necessary.

I have a graduated plastic jug that I pour the drained tranny fluid into. I then put back in what I drained out. My 2002 ES drains just a bit over 4 quarts as tusnative indicated. You should drain and fill at two consequtive oil changes and not worry about it for a couple of years after the second drain.
