i am in the need of new brake pads and am wondering if anyone is using aftermarket brake pads. which ones are they, are they worth the money, is it an improvement over stock, and whered ya get em. thanks once again for all the insight and help.

I got a set of the HPS Street pads from tirerack.com. They were 58 for the front, and made a noticeable difference in stopping force.

Haven't done the rear since they were new OEM pads, but will eventually have those as HPS also.

Tirerack had them to me in about 3 days I believe. Good price, fast shipping, great pads.

awesome thanks...keep em comming guys id like to see whats out there. and would i get the rear disk brake pads if my p5 has no abs?

Yes the P5 has discs all the way around, I don't have ABS, hate the thing. I just didn't replace the rear ones with HPS since I had the rears replaced about a month earlier. They had about 2% material left, while the front had about 20%. Then I got a new job and had the money to get the front pads upgraded.

Got the Hawk HPS pads front and rear from tirerack. I upgraded my rotors, brake lines, pads, and Motul brake fluid all at the same time....car stops really good now but I don't know how much of a difference the pads made by themselves. Definitely worth the money. Next set of pads I get will be the Hawk HP+ (higher performance but supposedly gives more noise/wear/dust). Some people use the EBC green stuff pads, which I considered, but it seemed that some people really hated them and had problems with them.

I just installed some Hawk HP Plus pads on the front. I'll let you know how they do once my track day is done Thursday.

For the rears I've got KVR Carbon Fibre/Kevlar pads. Works great. I also had them on the fronts too for street and track days. Works great as well but for me a lot of dusting.

i used the wagner brake pads last summer and they have a lifetime warranty. they feel as good if not better than the OEM pads......they have 15K on them now and still have pleanty of meat left.....

$44.XX at comsumer auto parts.....

Hawk Pads

I use Hawk HPS and stock rotors for the street ... MUCH BETTER braking than stock !

For auto-x I use HP+ and EBC rotors .... like freekin brick wall braking
(it's all in the pads) ... careful you might lose your fillings ...

I sometimes don't have time to take the HP+ pads off after an auto-x weekend..
.... I love daily driving with such phenomenal brakes.
They are noisy, and it takes only four days for my rims to get filthy.

The HPS pads are much quieter and it takes a few weeks before the rims
get real dirty ...

i have HPS all around, and i really like them. however, they sqeak like mofos.

i got them for autoX use since they grab a little quicker than the OEM pads; but don't kid yourself: the limiting factor in braking distance is tires. the OEM pads are strong enough to lock the wheels/trigger the ABS, so upgrading the pads does NADA in reality beyond altering the feel/pedal effort and perhaps dealing with heat better if you're in the mountains.

hell, my OEM pads were good enough to lock up r-compounds when i ran in Stock class...so don't expect miracles from aftermarket pads.

on my new autoX car (the 'rolla), i have HP+ in front and HPS in back. haven't driven on them enough to make a judgement, but from what i have heard the HP+ is not a particularly enjoyable street pad: too much dust and noise.

My HPS's used to squeek in the front too, so I took them off and put some disk brake quiet on them and they don't squeek at all anymore.

I ain't no expurt, but I'm pretty sure that locking up your brakes is not the fastest way to stop a car ...

I can stop my Car in a much shorter distance with HPS pads.

I can stop it in an even shorter distance with HP+ ....

"upgrading the pads does NADA in reality beyond altering the feel/pedal effort"
sorry .... hahahahahahahahahahahahaha ...

Get the Hawk HPS.

ProPartsUSA.com is selling them for real cheap now, search for his thread.

I agree with FasterP5....a LOT of stopping power happens before the brakes/tires actually lock up.....and for my (and most other people's) daily drivers, I hardly ever lock up the brakes...even in autoX. Any pads can lock up brakes, even the $10 pads at NAPA.

I do agree that in full brake lock-up, tires make a big difference, but only if your stopping the car at the limit of your tires.

really? bet you can't. why do you think it takes longer to stop in the rain than the dry? do you think your brakes don't work as well in the rain? no...your tires don't work as well, thus lengthening your stopping distance.

the correct statements would be:

i can stop my car in a shorter distance with Falken Azenis.
i can stop my car in an even shorter distance with Hoosiers.

maybe less laughing and more thinking would be helpful here....

i never said that locking your tires was the fastest way to stop the car. i said they were the limiting factor.

stronger pads only get you to the traction limit of the tires faster or with less pedal effort (something that many people confuse with "better stopping power").

so yes, while upgraded pads may change the characteristics of the braking system or the pedal effort required, as long as they are strong enough to reach the traction limit of the tires upgrading will not shorten your ultimate stopping distance.

in other words you'll be stopping shorter using the same pedal effort as before, but in a panic stop, nothing is different. my statement holds true: your brakes will FEEL better in normal use, but in the end, they're not stopping you any faster.

remember, brakes stop your wheels, but tires stop your car.

are they really that good? i heard they make alot of noise. not sure thought might be confused with some other one.
