Be careful opening the sliding doors in cold, icy weather

The plastic simply sheared:

(rolleyes) (hand)

Seven cars, never had that happen. Luckily insurance covered it this time. Part was in and repair was done by the next afternoon thankfully. I checked over on TrueDelta and someone reported a similar happening on their 1st gen 5.

Wow! Was the handle ever damaged before, or hit? Did you really pull the handle hard to break it? Seems like that should be a warranty item if not...

pffft, incredible. Mazda must have saved $15 per car to have that part made out of plastic instead of metal.
It looks like both sides broke - both the pivot and the "latch" end right?

Was the rubber door seal frozen to the body? How hard would you say you pulled on it?

Yeah the rubber seal had frozen. Both ends did indeed break. I pulled hard but no harder than I have on any other car door I've had. The door was perfectly fine previously, never damaged or sticky. Live and learn, I guess.
