Base Instrument Gauge Cluster Issue

Just had my first minor issue. A little less than 5 months out of warranty.

The fuel/temp cluster has a dead column of pixel. I guess this is something we’ll have to get used to going forward.

Wondering if anyone else has seen this issue, and if there was an easy fix. Could be a ribbon cable or maybe the screen itself. I wonder if they’d be willing to replace with warranty.

Mazda Canada says kick rocks, but suggests working with the dealer to diagnose and then they can try and bring a case to Mazda for help.

Not much to diagnose here. It's the LCD panel itself or the cable going to it, but the whole cluster itself is the replaceable unit.

Has anyone here ever replaced a gauge cluster on a CX-5 or CX-9?
 
Mazda Canada said I can try dealership and plead case. Dealership is sympathetic, and tried to qualify for goodwill, but no luck. I guess my last play is to plead my case one last time with Mazda, and if they tell me to F off, then I blast it on social media, JD Power surveys I still have to do, reconsider new car purchases, etc.

Part number for cluster is TD7H-55-430. $$3483.32 at dealership, haha, oof. There seems to be lots of eBay units kicking around, but not sure what would happen if you swapped. Is the odometer tied to the cluster anymore? Or is it fed from the ECU? I wonder if the cluster could be disassembled and the LCD replaced?

Likely just have to get used to looking at it. Unfortunate, but doesn't really affect anything. It's just such a visable defect. Every single time you start the car, you see it. Kick in the pants when it's just barely out of warranty.

This thread may help you. The member ended up disassembling is gauge cluster. You can see photos of the screen without the cover in his posts.

There are a lot of used speedometer on the market for a lot cheaper. You coud try to buy one disassemble it and swap the screen.

The mazda procedure to reset mileage for odometer replacement is here but i am not clear on what part the mileage is stored on.
 
If i was in your situation. I would get a cheap used gauge cluster and do forensic on it to see if the screen can be easily removed and swapped. Hoping that the screen is just a screen and does not store the mileage data of the car.
 
Nice! Thank you for this info. Good to have this resource. I if I lose any more lines, I'll definitely look at doing that. Functionally, it's a nothing-buger. If the car was a couple more years old, I wouldn't really care to be honest.

It's a shame because overall the car has been pretty much flawless. Really well designed, and easy to work on. Frustrating though when you see the disconnect between the engineering/design and the consumer/profit side. They can't obviously fix every issue, but hard not to feel like a complete chump when they give you the boiler plate response and shut the door in your face.

I can't imagine how disgusted those who developed cylinder head cracks felt like for the last few years.

This level of customer service is likely common across all brands at this point.. They only want to provide consumer satisfaction on par with their competition, not a bit more.
 
Update on instrument cluster situation.. I filed a grievance with CAMVAP, an arbitration board setup by the manufacturer's to prevent small claims court filings basically.. Whatever it was, it worked, and Mazda called me and told me if I withdraw my grievance then they would cover the cost.

Cluster has been on backorder for a few months, and finally came in. Had car in today to get it replaced.. Well.. Every time I go to the dealership something weird happens. They replaced the cluster, but they couldn't get the new odometer programmed with mileage.. They wanted to put a big yellow sticker in the door jamb with hand written info on it to show the odometer reading prior to the visit. I refused and asked to open a ticket with Mazda. So it sits in a pending state. I have the car at home now and it shows 20kms on it..

I hooked up ForScan software up to read and it also looks like they cleared the PCM. This also shows 20kms.. I have a feeling they blew away too much info in an effort to fix it, and locked themselves out.

Anyone have any experience re-programming the odometer on a newer Mazda? I thought that there was a way that you could sync the cluster to the PCM (though in my case this has also been reset), and only of the mileage was going forward, not backward.

So one step forward, two steps back. At least cluster looks good. I don't want to have to do math thought to calculate mileage. Not likely selling the car for a long time, but having a Carfax hit and a bit yellow sticker in the door jamb doesn't sound very fair for what should have been a simple repair.

The document says the two options should have been discussed and given to you before the replacement, but it looked like that was a miss on their part.

I read this TSB as well! I will try to use this as leverage if they say there's no more to do. They showed me a screenshot between their tech and Mazda Canada. It doesn't seem like they have that as an option, only the sticker method for Canada.. Seems a bit janky.. I wish they had said before hand, otherwise I would have just left it as is.

Still have an open ticket to try and see if they can restore the PCM mileage. I have a feeling that should not have been reset, and got in a bit over their head.
