All seasons?

So I'm at a point where I need to decide on going for All-Seasons or do the Summer/Winters. I'm going to be living in St Louis which I hear doesn't get a lot of snow... does the AWD help make up for the shortcomings of all-seasons? (I realize AWD doesn't do s*** when it comes to braking in the snow) and more importantly... do winters make the car less fun in the snow?

less fun, yes, more SAFE, absolutely.

its only fun until you wreck your car or hurt somebody....so, i would recommend picking up snow tires if you drive in snow a lot. for me here in OH, its pretty much a neccessity.

the AWD will help, but you'll actually get more oversteer which can be harder to correct than understeer. since most cars these days are FWD, its a weird feeling the first couple times you need to countersteer and hit the gas to pull out of a slide.

i've run all seasons in the winter with much success. year before last though i was on summer tires all winter and had a hell of a time stopping. i just left early and drove real slow, starting to stop long be fore i needed to.

but with all seasons grip and stopping way better. read some reviews from magazine and tire rack. some all seasons lean towards more winter grip than others.

I live about an hour west of STL and i run all seasons year round and have never had any problems with the amount of snow we get here.

Run two sets, you'll be much happier if you do. Much more confidence inspiring and worthwhile year round if you daily drive the car.

If I go the separate route, I'd probably get General Exclaim UHPs (what I have on there now). $200/tire is ridiculous, esp since they wont really last any longer and are only a little better.

starspecs are an arm and leg over the Exclaims. if you dont do any sort of aggressive driving then fine. if you want to have fun in the twisties i would shy away from the other brand.

I have tons of fun in the twisties out here on the Generals. Where I'm moving there are few twisties anyways...

i didnt sacrifice any fun running winter tires


if you are going to do two sets, shop around, i was able to pick up used 17" alloys and brand new winters at the same price or cheaper than buying just the 18" winters

Theres a guy near me selling some ADR 18" rims with the stock size X-Ices on them with 3000 miles... $550. I'm considering picking those up and selling the rims. Idk how much I could craigslist the rims for... here's the thread http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123770021

I live in Toledump. I used Pirelli PZero Neros through the winter and had no problem. Sure there were times when it was iffy but not sure if I can justify the cost of dedicated winter tires as most of my driving is highway...albeit VERY early in the AM. However, that is indeed an advantage as I am often the only car on the road other than a truck or two and I simply use their tracks as much as possible.
