Actual Engine Oil Capacity (with filter change)

I read in the very helpful how-to about changing the engine oil that some find that the oil dipstick shows full after adding less than the 4.5 US qts the owners manual states. I just changed my oil and it shows full after adding an even 4 qts (I ran it and drove it, got it hot, and let it drain back into the pan for quite a while).

Have others found this? Does Mazda have an explanation for this?

I've always just added 4 qts when I drain and change the filter. It leaves a few ounces of "room" to get to F on the dipstick, but not a whole pint (half a quart for those who are un-convertible :) ). IIRC, 4 quarts w/a filter change on mine leaves somewhere around 6(??) ounces of 'room' to full.

As I said in the other post, I put in 3.5 quarts without a filter change or 4 with a filter change. Always seems to put the level at full or even a bit above.

When I drain the oil the front is on ramps. The cars tilts back towards the drain which should help. I have let it drip for an hour before but there was no measurable change in the fill capacity.

I don't have an answer for your question. I guess the manual is just wrong for the real world.
