A smell and noise - Mazda5 Sport

About a week ago I started getting a smell through the ventilation like the smell of the contacts on an electrical racecar taken right off the track. It's present with & w/o the fan on and when you switch to either floor or defrost or a/c it turns on the compressor. At this point a noise starts being made, not the belt though, it's a back pressure noise (near the firewall where the heat and a/c hoses punch throught the firewall) which will kill the car if at idle but not immediately after a cold Colorado morning start. Back to the smell...I opened the power steering fluid reservoir and the fluid smells the same as my weird ventilation smell but I don't appear to be losing any fluid according to the fluid reservoir level indication lines, in fact the reservoir indicates it's been overfilled but I didn't overfill it, nor have I replaced it ever...hmmm...ever. Not sure if this is related so please don't get blinded by the indicator light but I have had, for a long time running, the P0126 check engine light indicating for a while too...any info on both would be appreciated. Thank you.

Search is your friend. This was my poor attempt http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123805176-Mazda5-with-CEL-P1026-amp-Thermostat-Replacement&highlight=p0126 at a DYI for thermostat replacement - others have added good advice (P0126) Several threads about this issue - one fairly recent. From what I read, running your engine "cold" may not be good long term - and hurts your gas milage.

Funny smell - not sure, I wonder if your a/c belt is slipping when your a/c engages? Frozen a/c compressor? Does the a/c compressor rotate when the a/c is turned on?

Sounds like frying electronics IMHO. Pretty sure that floor heat does not turn on the compressor, so I think some current got jumped in there & now its all awry. You show an 06 Sport, so I assume you have manual climate controls (3 knobs) not auto? I have the manual controls & the only pressing AC or going into defrost mode will engage the compressor.

Just a note that only using the floor only does in fact run the compressor.
