The wife's 5 is now occasionally grinding a bit when shifting into second. Any recommendations on fluid replacement? I wonder if I'd be better off asking in the maz3 section.

I highly regard Miata.net and BITOG reviews. Overall, you'll find that this stuff comes highly recommended from the fanatics. This is formulated for the more demanding EURO Ford specs. It is expensive but well worth it. I also used it in my previous Mz5 and it made a HUGE difference for me. My grip was also a notchy 1-2, very pronounce when cold but gets better warmed up. The Motorcraft *almost* eliminated all of it.

FYI, it is much easier/cleaner/cheaper to fill it coming top-down instead of using a siphon pump bottom-up. Simply remove the plastic shroud that directs air to the battery and you have full access to the fill hole. A 1 foot hose + funnel is all you need. Super easy. Also, the Mz5 uses a shared clutch reservoir with the brake. I also highly recommend changing (not just bleeding) your brake fluid. All that hot braking action is killing the fluid that the clutch has to share.

Thanks. I used motorcraft in the miata before in hopes of curing a 5th gear grind, even changed out the turret fluid. Didn't help though. I'll try it in the 5 and see what happens. I don't use brakes too much on her car so I'll probably hold off on changing that fluid for awhile.

Mine started doing that at 45kish miles and at 52k they replaced the synchros in 1/2 and the gear for 2. Keep an eye on your warranty period since this may be the old five speed issue not fixed for the 6mt.

My previous car was a 2004 Corolla with 5MT. Over the 85K miles I drove in it I did 2 changes of transmission fluid, one at 40K and one at 80K. Per manufacturers specs, I used 75w90 gear oil, Mobil 1 synthetic. The car shifted and drove beautifully and at each change, the fluid came out dark in color but not burnt. Never had any issues with synchros, grinding, or missed shifts either before or after I changed fluid. I'd recommend the Mobil 1.
