Hi all,

I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2006 Mz5 GT in manual.
113,000kms, zero mazda service history but its a very clean car.

Its off for a Mazda dealership pre purchase inspection and compression test just to make sure its all good, but I do have a few questions.

1) There is a leak from somewhere into the spare wheel well. looks to be coming from the right hand side of the car in behind the luggage area trim.
Any tsb's, or known issues with water leaks in the rear end?

2) 113,000kms.. anything past due from a service point of view? I think plugs, valves, coolant.. anything else?

Any feedback much appreciated!

Thanks

1. Rear shocks... check those. They're under-spec'd from the factory, and tend to blow quickly- like way faster than 113k km.
2. Check online service schedule?

Has a new rear shock and sway bushes at 99k kms
cracks in teh hatch I didn't see, but it has teh GT spoiler.

Managed to talk to a previous owner, it had large loss of oil issue, not leaking, just dissapearing.
She bought the car, and then had the Kia dealer P/X her into something else.. also a lemon, shes now in a legal suit against the kia dealer!

I see a couple of threads talking about the 2.3 burning oil and it being a widespread problem, but see no detaisl about what teh problem is.

Anyone have info or experience of oil loss in a 2.3?

is it rings, seals valves?
Wasn't burning blue smoke or anything on test drive

Should probably avoid, but teh price is good...Guess thats why its cheap ;)

Hmmm....I don't have any issues with oil loss, nor have I heard that it was a problem with these engines.

I've not heard that these engines being "prone" to oil loss as a common problem. The MZR engine is an *old design. One thing that I know of from my Miata days as well as seen on some Mz3 is a leaking rear main seal. Typically a slow leak but a pricey fix (drop trans)! Google "Mazda3 rear main seal" Did you get the compression test results?

Anyone have info or experience of oil loss in a 2.3? Not if you actually get the oil changed once in awhile!

I've had a lot of things replaced on my 06. They were neglected in years 1-3 by the PO, but I had the 4 year warranty, so I got to be good friends with a certain service advisor for the next year. Since the TSBs were addressed, the only issues I've had were the rear shocks, the front sway bushings and the battery issues. I have yet to address the fact that the driver's window switch doesn't control the rr window about half the time, the right turn signal return broke and that the MIL came on for a solid 3 months and just went away recently, with about 2 months to go before emissions. Compared to my Hondas, its been VERY cheap to own. I could want for more, but considering what it is: the cheapest, most fuel-efficient way to move 6 people, I'm OK with what I've got.

I don't know if this is too late to help you, but...
I have an 06. It now has 130K (miles) on it and the only thing that's actually broken on mine was the brake light switch. Everything else I had to do to mine was normal wear/maintenance items. I should also add that my 5 was a dealer rental vehicle for a year or so (25K worth of miles) before I got it. No other issues in that time for me. The only thing about my vehicle that I'd do differently (other than making my spouse learn stick shifting... argh) is get a newer one for an auto with more gears in it. If you're looking for a stick shift 5 then don't worry about it. These cars are fairly robust other than some easily dealt with electrical issues (the brake light switch thing) and "weak" rear shocks, which would need replacing on the car you're talking about anyway. I'd get another 5 in other words.

Got a little over 74,000 miles and had to change out front struts (right strut fluid leak) and rear shocks, one engine mount (fluid leak), engine coolant sensor and thermostat and both sliding door actuators. The rest were just normal wear and tear maintenance.
