2005 Mazda 6 CEL, scanner doesn't read

This is my fist post here, and it retains to my fiancee's car. She has a 2005 Mazda 6 I and her check engine light went on. I tried scanning it with an Actron OBDII scanner, but it keeps giving me an error when trying to connect. I tried it on my car and it worked fine. I am connecting it to the data port under the steering column. What am I doing wrong, or are there other ways to read codes on these cars WITHOUT a scanner? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the scanner CAN compliant? The 6 requires a CAN compliant OBD-II scanner.
