My 2001 Protege 1.6L has developed a loud screetch on acceleration. It is moderate light audible squeel at idle but when I accelerate there is the loud metallic screetching for about 15 to 30 seconds then it goes away for a while. This happens primarily at cooler temperatures. Above 60 degrees it hardly occurs at all. Both belts have been replaced recently. Belt tension seems to be ok. It appears to be coming from the alternator. Would a bad alternator bearing cause this sound? Would there be any other parts in that vincinity of the engine that would cause the noise? Any help would be appreciated.

more than likely a belt. do your dash lights dim upon this happening?

if so then tighten your alternator belt. this can be done by moving the cruise control, and loosening the jam nut on the alternator. then tighten the bolt in the rear that spaces the alternator further back then retighten the jam nut on the side of the alternator. this should fix your problem. if not, then try tightening your other belts. hope this helps.
