1999 Protege LX stereo question

I'm looking to get a head unit for my 99 Protege LX. It has the stock CD player and cassette deck in it.

My question is, are these two units separate (where I could just replace the CD player) or will I need to pull both?

What equipment will I need to do this?

It looks to me, I could be wrong here but it looks like Mazda made it two separate single din sized pieces. I assume both come out separately and you can just replace with a double-din, like I did or a single din with an adapter. The 99 radio is different from my 01 stock radio, so I'm trying to go off visuals here,

Thanks! I ordered a single din head unit from Crutchfield, so I'm going to just replace the CD player for now and leave the tape deck in. Hopefully that works out.

Ok, CD player is in and works great. I'm psyched. Only thing is... now there is a gaping hole where the tape deck used to be. Would I be able to find like... a pocket that would fit in the slot? Here's another picture:
