151MPH in the MSP

oh yea. its possible. It was pulling really hard still. With gearing changes i really think 180mph would be possible with allmost no work.

Greddy Turbo Timer had a peak speed of 243 km/hr which is 151mph. I wasnt sure how much the speedo would be off, because it was really far past 140. That was sitting at about 6500rpms.

I'm still shaking from the run. (boom07)

Car felt really good at that speed, and it climbed suprisingly quickly.

BOOM due to Redling in your future...

i can get up to the speed govenor pretty quick and the car is definately still pulling so with the microtech and a few other mods i see it feasable. What kind of tires are you trusting at those speeds? Im pretty sure the stockers arent meant for that kind of speed. (180mph)

Oh the gearing would have to be re-done, but i want every gear to be longer anyway, so that really wouldnt be a problem. If anything else, i could cruise on the highway at 2300rpms instead of 3500rpms.

As for the tires, i was on the stockers last night, and they are ZR rated so good for at least 149mph, but RE050's which are the newer version are ZR87W's which are limited at 168mph. So tires would become a very real concern.

As for the 180, areodynamically i dont see that being a problem, as long as you had enough hp to back you up. Last night the car was pulling really hard up top at 150 and thats with 250hp/293tq so with a higher boost setting, or some more mods (giggle), and the new gearset i think 180 could be very feasable.

One last thought was that a tranny cooler would be a must, after seeing TurfBurns templogs from his higer speed runs, the tranny oil must be getting uber hot, so for a 180run, it would be a neccessity. Also, my brakes were stinking more than a 50 cent ***** last night after slowing down, and i really think that without an upgraded BBK it really wouldnt be wise to attempt such a run.

One thing i forgot to mention was that when i hit 150 allmost on cue last night my drivers side door started howling horrendously. Like it lost seal at that speed. I dont know what was going on but i figured that was a good cue to shut her down.

All in all, to be honest, it is my new goal to make a 180mph capable MSP. All the mods required are mods that i was going to do anyway (tranny gearing, tranny cooler, BBK, new tires/wheels) so the end result is going to be a high speed MSP one way or the other. To be honest, i dont see myself ever attempting to make a 180mph run (unless i was like in the desert or something) because i really think i lack the balls to do that. Last night got the adrenaline pumping awful fast.

I wasnt aware our valvetrain was that bad?

Every Part of the drivetrain is pinned at it's maximum. I realise that it's a fully built Protege. Even so, The tranny is just not good for High Speed. I've accepted that the car is geared for the 1/4 mile and bought a Porsche. Do the same man because I would rather see you spend $3000.00 On an old Porsche than rebuild a Built Motor for $6000.00

I'm not being a H8TR, I really do understand the quest for speed, but I just don't want to hear about a Zoom Zoom Boom on something as simple as proplonged Overreving, (What Killed My MP5T the first time as you might remember last October)

Yea your probably right... I wasnt up near the top for that long, but its definatly something I will think about before i re-attempt such a run. I love driving my car (and having a car to drive) too much to risk losing it due to my own shenanigans.

Why even ask why? Your on a car forum for people that want to mod cars and are car geeks! Speed for most people on here is what it's all about. Now I don't think even with 300 hp a protgeg could do it just because of the aero dynamics of the car. But I could be wrong. I hit 147 in my Z28 with the tops off. That was a windy ride but man the rush of it was bad ass.

who the hell uses their brakes going over 150...that is plain stupid...you know how fast the life on brakes and rotors deplete when doing that??!? if you are going that fast you should have enough space to coast then brake....even if there is a cop...dont brake....just keep going....by the time he would hit your speed you would have over a 3 mile lead.....anyway.....using your brakes to slow down at that high of a speed is just asking for new pads or rotors by next month (if this is your weekly ritua)l....i dont know what to tell you...it is your car.......just advice....

i know pirana has been up in those numbers in his nsx. perhaps even higher.

Actually, Pirana ran a AMG Mercedes, and was over 150 MPH with it when he had the old P5, and the HiBoost kit.

150mph at what RPM? Same with pirana. You climbed to what post 140mph. I just don't see anyone getting outside the gearing, regardless of power.

Ask Pirana. that's what I remember him saying. He asked the AMG driver how fast they were going, and he said something like 155.

My kinda project :D

I'm not sure of your current mods...but of course it's possible with the right approach and more money ;) You need the whole enchilada setup for anything over 150mph. Safety first...I would have a full on roll cage in case you go for a spin (literally) and for stability...Tires rated for at least 180mph...upgrade the durability of the cooling system (hoses, fittings etc)...get a tranny cooler...look into a gear change/tranny upgrade...if you're really serious upgrade the valve-train/head...consistent high rpm is going to take it's toll very quickly...tape up any unnecessary openings and gaps on the car...fab up a custom front air dam to help get those few extra mph...monitor vital engine functions like a hawk without taking your concentration of the road!

There are several legal ways to test the top speed of your car...Saltflats, Silver State Classic etc...

Keep us updated and good luck! (thumb)

Antoine - thanks for the vote of confidence and you are very right about the safety aspect. That would be a main priority for me above all else. I just think it would be a really neat goal that would create a really neat car.

I am wondering about the upgraded valvetrain, because my bottom end is bullet proof, but other than a port/polish we didnt touch the valvetrain. Does anyone know what options there are out there for upgrade valvetrain? I know corksport sold eibach valve springs, but other than that i havent heard of anything.

That's frickin fast... I've been 150 in a car before, it's crazy. :shakeshead:

I've only had my MSP up to 125. It didn't feel right any faster than that due to wind.

the aerodynamics of the 3rd generation protege does amaze me from what research i saw mazda putting out a few years ago. also their chassis engineering is just amazing.

yes, eibach valve springs, titanium/ferera valves, P&P, etc
