02 Protege 4 lug
Hello everyone
Last week this previously reliable car had a catastophic cylinder head crack and blew all of the coolant out of the #2 cylinder. It was towed to a non AAA shop and the mechanic wanted to rebuild the top end that had gotten so hot that it fried thespark plug wires and boots and oh, it needed a new fuel pump at the same time. I believed the blown cylinder head but smelled freshly grilled rat about the fuel pump. So I decided to send the car to one of these shops that specializes in installing used engines from Japan. Everything went well untill that shop tried to start the car, it will turn over but wont fire.
When the tow truck dropped off the car at shop #2, we tried to get the mileage on the speedometer but couldnt even though the battery was connected. The project is stalled untill after Memorial day. Depressing clue #1 about the shop. They have a sign out front that says "master mechanis wanted".
Any idea's that may help the guy?(headshake

same here

Same thing happened to me. I got me a JDM engine for a 02 Protege5 cuz my tranny broke down. I had th axles out before the engine arrived so it was that much easier. The harness was a snap and so were the mounts. I had to swap out a few things like some sensors, exhaust mani, custom fuel return line, adjustment to tranny side mount. So i button everything down and all seems legit, "on the real side". I go to start the DAMN THING and it wont go. I've checked everything, at first i thought it was the trigger sensor "crank shaft position" then i swapped out the home sensor "cam sensor" but no cigar. I checked the ecu and no problems but i checked it again and it has "no link" so that leads me to think that i have a bad ecu. Im also not getting any spark or fuel, the pump works fine. Im all done! Its over my head. If your Mechis have figured it out please let the rest of the tuning world know. This is all valued info. Thanks!

Pull the valve cover off and check how many pick ups there are on the cam gears. The protege needs 3 pick ups; US Mazda 626s (and some JDM FS engines) have 1 pickup. There is also a difference on the crank pulley teeth but I don't know exactly what the difference is.
Anyway.... If you have only one pickup on your cam gear than you will need to swap to your stock cam gears* and the crank pulley.

*Technically you only need to swap the exhaust cam gear (the intake is not monitored by a sensor.)

Also, if you need to swap parts I would *highly* recommend changing your water pump; timing belt, spring and idler pulley while you are in there.
