but it's crankin out doo doo...

I would like to upgrade my door speakers and add a sub woofa (rhymes with loofa) Maybe add an amp or 2.
I want to keep my stock head unit as to be on the sly. I don't want anyone being tipped off and using a brick to help themselves. wink wink nudge nudge
I'd also like to retain my steering wheel controls so I may toggle through Justin Timberlake tracks whilst beating various STis in impomptu drag races. sike

Doable? Or not worth it?

I am putting in a system. I had put this together all ready. 1 12" Rockford fosgate Power series T2 sup/with a 3000 watt class D rockford sub amp. Boston acoustic door speakers. The down side is that I am putting extra weight in the back where I dont want anymore weight. Its kinda of your call if you like a good sounding car audio system.

I have a stock H/U setup with a amp and sub in my MS3. Connected a line out converter to the back speaker wires. Steering wheel controls still work. I keep my fade at front 2 or it hits way too hard.

very doable and very well worth it... i am running a sweet system and still using the stock hu... thinking about getting a jl clean sweep or something along those lines at the moment... that will take most of why you upgrade your stocker out of the equation. things to remember if you are setting up a new system. always go a bit bigger on power wire so you can upgrade if you want with out having to run new wire. don't skimp on terminals and connectors either 1 bad connection can ruin everything. sound deadening the front doors is a must if you amplify the front speakers. i wouldn't even worry about the rear speakers. just fronts and a sub. i get compliments all the time on how loud and crisp my system is... it can be a very and enjoyable investment.

Are you using the stock head unit?
I am still not sure on that. I have a nice Kenwood deck that has sub outs, and plays mp3's. But I aslo like the stock head unit. It fits the car nicely, and I havent found a aftermarket dash kit that i liked yet.

I had a nice kenwood deck too with line out and mp3 but heard that all the H/U mount kits were not very good for our cars.

If you can solder that is the way to go. Very clean and good results. If you use wire nuts or something else you may run out of room to put the H/U back in.

Hey look if your interested in a truly audiophile sound reproduction/quality modification then you have one of two options. 1. change your head unit. And I completely agree with you on that option. To many logistical issues to deal with, and worst of all you won't be able to conceal Justins beats as you do now with steering controls. Your only other options, and a good one it is, but expensive. 2. To use a OEM frequency filter/controller. You will obtain the sound quality of dedicated head unit with sub outs and the like without sacrificing all of those important OEM dashboard features that you obviously have grown to love. You will need to do a little research but here is a start. It will get you on the road to true sound quality and quantity if desired. Also I did see somewhere a really neat little mod on this forum of a guy who put in a concealed 8in sub. Basically remove the stock jack cover in the rear left trunk space. And if your good at working with carbon/glass fiber make your own sub shroud/enclosure or have your local sound specialist do it for you. It really looked good, and considering the size of the cabin should reproduce low frequencies well. Just a thought. Here are those links. Oh just found the pic of that woofer mod.

Using an LOC like the clean sweep can you still use all your factory speakers and still run a sub in the trunk? Or does using the rear speaker channel conection only allow you to use the sub for the rear channel?

If yall are worried about the weight of adding subs check out critical mass. They make a sub that uses a neo-magnet which is hella light. The link below is for a 10" sub that can handle 5000watts and only weights 18 Lbs and needs 1cubic foot of sealed airspace. Read the specs, its 66% lighter then other compairable subs.

Does the JL cleansweep do the same thing as the RF 360.1/2? Putting a sub in the car without getting anything under 100mHz is a waste of time IMO. Doesn't the stock h/u filter out anything lower than 100mHz?

I just picked up my 10" Boston Pro sub and DAMN that thing is heavy!

re-Q looks like the ticket!
