Yokohama yk580 or Michelin Latitude tour HPs?

:
2007 GT FWD, Bose/NAV
I had my heart set on getting a set of Yoko Spec-Xs, but I have read a lot of bad reviews regarding tread life; Many other good things to say about the tire though. That said I have been eyeing the Yokohama yk580 and the Michelin Latitude tour HPs. Discount tire has the Yokos and Tire rack has the Michelins. I am torn between the two. The Yokos are cheaper and might ride quieter, but I believe the Michelins might perform better. Does anyone have any thougths or experiences on the two?

My Pirelli scorpion STR As have lasted 40K and have been a great tire. Not so good traction on wet roads here in Italy though.

I am on my second set of Yoko Spec-Xs.
OE to 22K.
1st set Spec-X to 45K.
On 2nd set now.
I replace tires earlier than most on the roads.

So, based upon all the feedback in this thread, j/k, I think I will blow the money on a set of Michelins. The local tire shop will pull the old tires, mount the new ones, and balance them for 40 euro total ($53). The shipping alone from tire rack to here is $118!!!!

Got my Michelins in in five days. Went to the local Italian tire shop and they removed the old tires, mounted the new ones, balanced them, and did an alignment for 40 euro. My right front alignment was a bit out. I drove the tires home the five miles and so far they sound quieter. The tires feel really weird to the touch (gummy), but seem to have better grip that my Pirelli STR-As. Time will tell and I will keep you posted. Normally I am not excited to go to work, but tomorrow I am (zoom zoom)!!!!

How much wear do you get out of the Nitto?
Saw one review in Consumer Report by a driver disgusted he has to replace them after 20K!

Go on tirebuyer and read all the reviews for the Nitto Nt850. They have a pro rated 50k warranty. If properly inflated and rotated they will last 50k. They are non-directional but have a specified "outside" vs inside. I just rotated mine after 5k miles on new 850's. The front tires had worn 1/32. I rotated in an X pattern so now the tires in the front that were in the back will wear 1/32 in the next 5k miles. So if you do the math then the flamer poster is full of b.s. I look at cars all the time with like 8/32 on the inside of a tire and bald on the outside. Mis-alignment, improper inflation and improper or lack of rotation are key factors in rapid tire wear.

Also, my CX-9 is fwd so I my tires will also wear differently than an awd setup.

Unfortunately you can't just buy tires, slap em on and drive them to 50k without doing all the other things I mentioned, but many people do and then get all hot and bothered.

I wouldn't listen to one review. Look at the hundreds of reviews on tirebuyer.

We put the YK580 on my wife's car about a year ago at 50k on the OEM Bridgestones (probably could have gone 10K more). So far we have about 25-30K on them & I rotate them at every oil change (roughly 5k), which I think is more than most of the general public can say. I've had it aligned 2 times in the last year, also. I didn't have it aligned when I purchased the tires b/c I had gotten such good & even wear out of the Bridgestones. At this point, 2 of the YK 580s are seeing what appears to be significant wear in the center rib. Guys at Firestone & Discount Tire say they could have been slightly overinflated (due to the heat?) or something. Odd since I rotate consistently & they should all be at same pressures. At this point, i'm hopeful that these two don't make it to the pro-rated warranty & I can get 2 more at a discount. They seem to handle ok but I was looking for better wear

In my opinion, once you get into the 50k and beyond mileage on a set of tires, they become extremely dangerous, bumpy and noisy. Rubber loses its elasticity especially on tires where the rubber gets heated every drive. Rubber becomes hard and brittle over time. As tires become stiffer, they become dangerous on wet/snowy roads, they become somewhat out of round, and they get really loud.

Personally, I will only every buy a tire that wears out at 50k max.

My experience with the Spec-X:

OE to 18k
1st set Spec-X to 40k (4-5 /32nds)
2nd set Spec-X to 60k right now, they are about 5-6 /32nds

I will keep using them tho as Discount warranties them and I save 50% off next set - they are not cheap!
