Yeah, a fast P5 is expensive, but when you think about it....

Turbo (soon) Yellow 2002 P5
If you think about it, it is a great value.

I see a lot of people wondering if a turbo set up is worth it on a P5? I know that it is.

You guys know how the P5 drives and handles. It is great, just incredibly slow.

For those of you who are weary of jumping head-first into modding your daily driver, this will help you decide.

In the coming weeks you will see a build up of my P5. The famous Beau from MAM and I are putting together an incredible daily driver with all around performance in mind. It will not be a dyno queen either, it will be a real street car, and my daily driver.

- We will have the pics of the install and prices, REAL prices.
- We will post performance specs. I personally would like to do a Motor Trend type test - 0-60, 0-100, 1/4, 120 feet @70mph -0, 0-100-0, and slalom speed (I have to research that one).
- We will post numbers of comprable cars and cars that we beat (there will be some good names on that list, no doubt)
- The car will be street legal.
- We will have gas mileage tabs.
- We will, of course, have real dyno numbers with true boost numbers.

PARTS GOING ON THE P5
MAM sleeper turbo kit
MAM built engine
Head work
Guages
Engine Management
Full exahust
K Sport Coilovers
Brake Upgrade
Suspension upgrades
Fuel upgrades
Tranny upgrades
LSD
Rota Wheels

Should be fun. (naughty) Stay tuned.

This sounds like a great project. I can't wait to see the results!

It will be a process, but not too bad. All of the parts are here or on order. We start with the intercooler install this week.

Good luck, and may the force be with you.

*Guess that was kinda lame* :(

I will definitely be looking out for your report tho'.

wow, sounds like the car is gonna be one hell of a beast.

MAM is doing some awesome work for the mazda community. Glad to see more FI protege's out there.

Beau is great. That is why I am going to make these build threads. He does some incredible work. I want to show the value of doing a project right the first time with quality parts.

These cars have potential. We will see how much a P5 can do in a little bit.

Here is one number I can gurantee....

300 plus Wheel HP (Safe, street tuned 300whp).

why oh why did I take a sporttronic, I hate myself everyday over it. I went from a absolute terror of a FD, and then to the auto p5. I stalk the junkyards, and auto wreckers weekly for a tranny and everything. I want to go Forced induction so bad in my car it hurts. You all suck. I want a new transmission. Anyone wanna trade me for a manual, all leave all my parts on it.

I know EXACTLY how you feel man. I got me an auto thinking i'd never get into the import scene. But after friends telling me to do this and do that, and stumbling upon this forum, it makes me salty that i didn't get a standard car to begin with.

All the videos i watch of the turbo'd P5's, and MP3's, and mazdaspeed's and such make me jealous. And having friends in the mazda club with turbo'd protege's makes it even more junk for me. I too was looking for protege's at the wreckage yards with a standard transmission, that i could possibly swap in.

This is the main reason i gave up on motor mods for my car. Looks is all i have plans for, unless some miraculous thing happens, and i get a 5-speed pro, or stumble across a wrecked one that i can do a swap with.

It hurts, oh the agony. The thing is I now have other cars, that saying nicely would own many of MAM cars, but I dont care becuase they are ugly. EK ugly, MR2 ugly. The p5 oh so sexy. Well once I sell the corvair and maybe something else, i might venture into actually doing it. BUT IDK, might have to get rid of them all, and go Bavarian for awhile.

Yeah, I am not aware of how much of a pain it is to do an auto to manual swap. I do imagine it is quite involved, but it can be done.

Yes, you can get a transmission VERY cheap.

why dont you autos.....man up and do what LIL FREEK was going to do and upgrade the auto tranny......and then boost....

but from what ive heard....some autos are boosting safely at 4-5psi on a daily bases with no problems as of yet....

mazda recyclers here in rancho cordova will most likely be getting mine pretty soon. If not, I am sure that they have plenty of other manual P5's so pick parts from. Shipping won't be cheap, but it could be done...

Subscribing for the build-up...

No offense man, but how can you posibly "know that it is,"? That statement just bothers me because you havn't ever owned a turbo protege.

For those of you who are weary of jumping head-first into modding your daily driver, this will help you decide.

I hear what you're saying, but your car is going to be much more impressive than someone's who is not commited to modding it when they buy it. Most people who would want a basic turbo kit for a daily driven car are not going to sink $15,000 into their vehicle with top of the line suspension, expensive head work, upgraded EVERYTHING! It's just not realistic for you to claim to be testing a normal daily driven protege but spending more on mods than the car cost when you bought it!

That should be very interesting, but tests like that will have no bearing on what the car acts like in traffic. It's really hard to test the drivability of a car in measured amounts that you can post on the internet, ya know?

We will, of course, have real dyno numbers with true boost numbers.

Built engine, head work, brake, suspension (beyond the coilovers, mind you), fuel, and tranny upgrades, plus an LSD! There's no doubt this car is gonna kick ass, but it's just gonna be rediculously expensive to tout as an "everymans daily driver"

I'm not trying to be an asshole, just making sure you think about what you're saying.

Lil Freek did swap to a manual though.

The biggest issue there is restricting yourself to staying at that low of a boost level. Considering that most MSP owners complain about their's and those come from the factory around 7-8psi, that is pretty low.

BTW, 65racecoupe, I can't wait till your P5 is complete, should be awesome. :)

What kind of performance numbers are you expecting? How much $$$ are you spending?
