XelderX's BG FSP Build

Updates

I haven't posted much lately since there hasn't been much going on. I'm currently saving up some money for some rather expensive upgrades. I have a Quaife LSD and Tilton 5.5" twin disk clutch setup coming soon. The 2.0L is out of the car and ready to make a journey to Texas. I just tore down a 1.8L BP motor and it is getting ready to get the full treatment.

Nothing much happening right now. I'm waiting for the block to come back from the machine shop. I might start doing a little porting on the head this week, but it depends on my schedule. I'm working on some modifications to the crank pulley to get the ignition to work properly, but that is about it. Right now it's just a waiting game until I can save up enough money to buy the rest of the parts I need. Once all that is in place it should get going pretty fast.

argh....see what happens when you don't read everything - you miss important stuff.

the BP is probably a technically better engine to start with - you lose displacement but gain some much needed revability. Was just cool that you were using a dirty old FSDE in that thing :$

guess it'll find a new home?

What adapters made it illegal? He was pretty damn careful putting this thing together to follow the rules. What forthcoming rule change forces him to go back to the 1.8?

FastTrack Update

Street Prepared:

15.10.J is intended to permit alternate motor mounts, but may not be used to make adapters. A
motor mount assembly compliant with 15.10.J will be functionally identical in terms of bolt spacing, length, reach and angle to a
legal, OEM mount. (ref. 09-144)

Don't worry Jay. Actually forcing me to build a new drivetrain from the ground up was probably the worst thing they could have done. Now I'm actually being serious about it.

I've been slaving away at the rebuild as much as possible over the last few weeks. The head is now finished and ready to be put on the short block as soon as my new headgasket gets here. I'm in the middle of cleaning up the intake manifold. It would go a lot quicker if the hardware store would stock more emery wheels for my Dremel. Someone gave me an underdrive crank pulley from a Miata, but they had cut off the power steering pulley so I had to add that back on. Here are a few pictures.

It weighs 1.3 lbs right now, but it will gain a few more ounces when I bolt the trigger wheel to it. It will still be 2-3 lbs lighter than the stock pulley. The next big fabrication issue will be the headers. I'm taking a set of AWR headers and replacing the FS flange with a Racingbeat Miata flange to bolt them to the BP block. After that it should just be an issure of bolting everything up and crossing my fingers that it cranks.

That's the damn truth. Same problem here.

I wish I had the facilities to TIG weld. I hate having to rely on others to expedite my work. My intake manifold is like swiss cheese what with the left over VICS, EGR, and unused vac-port holes.

Funny you re-added the PS pulley...I'm having mine removed (albeit OE pulley).

I'm looking forward to nationals!

Yea...the hacked Miata pulley was given to me, thank goodness. The CNCed aluminum pulley boss was $45 and the new PS pulley was $65. It was a really nice looking CV Products pulley too before I machined the spokes out of it. These are the joys of building a Protege.

ps...and why in the hell does no one stock BP head gaskets?????

pps...on those newer Miatas with the four post trigger wheel, where does the sensor mount?

It mounts at about 2 o'clock. There's a hole on the water pump that it's affixed to.
