xbox owners

What can you do with these things...besides games

mod'd vs non mod'd/.

Lets say I bought one, and got a dvd remote thingy. ( I haven't yet, still looking for best price )

Before Mod, can I

Play mp3's like a mp3 player through my stereo? If so, does it have some sort of onscreen (TV) display to show names of files, length etc AmI restricted to dvd's on a CDR/CDRW/DVDRW..... or can I copy them to the HD and play them.

Play DVD's....ok I figure yes, but after a MOd, any troubles playing DIVX, SVCD/VCD's? How do Codec's work? I have to install Codec's on the computer from time to time but with an x box.....how or do you have to?

I have to buy a DVD player, and I'm just wondering if there's anything the x box can't do that a stand alone can.

What connections are on the back for video/audio? I'm asuming 3 rca jack ( yellow/white/red ) Optical out?

i'm curious as well as to what else these can do...i was thinking of getting one, even though i already have a ps2. and in a way i already have an xbox...its called my pc :p

Sorry man, I don't know much about the modded box's, but I do have one of the newer ones.

The quality from the DVD playback is not nearly as good as one of the cheaper progressive-scan DVD players. IMO both the box and the PS2 have pretty crappy DVD players in them. Plus, microsoft makes you buy the stupid remote to enable the player.

The connections on the back are LAN, power, and then a custom one that a few different cords will plug into. The standard cord comes with the 3 RCA's on one end, but you can get a super video cord, or coaxial cord for it. There is no optical out for the audio unless it's under a panel that I have never removed:).

I mod Xboxs. I have a 120 giger in mine. You can play movies from your computer with the xboxmedia player. You can backup you games to the Harddrive so you can just play them off of your hard drive and you can also play emulators. Thats just a few good things about a modded xbox.

I had a Xbox, but I didn't mod it or anything. I also wanted to see how the Xbox handles DVD, so I went out on a Sunday evening to the local Toysrus. While I was on my to the Toysrus some drunk ass rearended me, but the damage was minimal. I sold the Xbox after that. I think PS2 is the best for gaming, but if your look for great graphics Xbox is the best. PS2 has more selection of games then Xbox.

The reason the PS2 DVD player sucks is cause Sony wants you to also buy their DVD player. I know a couple of ppl who have had problems with their PS2 DVD player.

u must mod...in the long run u will save a s*** load of money...TRUST ME!! plus u don't need the DVD remote...u can use the controller to play your dvds.. :)

I won't mod my Xbox. The reason is becuase modding the xbox takes away the single greatest thing about it. Xbox Live. Apart from that the only other downside of a modded Xbox is that it voids the short warranty that comes with them.

ok, what about mp3's? and i

And I am going to mod it, but I want the remote for the ease of use, and I the woman will be using it as well so I want it easy for her.

so the video output sucks? Damn. I use a laptop now for DVD playback....actually, I hardly rent anything so it's all downloaded and svcd/vcd/divx. The laptop is my work one and I am probably going to loose it someday.

a progressive scan Panasonic DVD player that plays all that stuff plus has Dolby Digital and DTS will only set you back $79. Just pick up one of those. And renting DVD's is cheap too and quality is much better than Bittorrent hacks and even those pay-per-view online vid sites. Try out Netflix.....it's like $20 a month and you can rent as many movies as you want with no late fees.....and you never have to go to the video store either.

My brother modded his XBOX extensively. He has a 200GB HDD in it with every game you can imagine, and every emulator you can imagine. He never has to get up - he can control everything with the controller. He watches his movies from his XBOX. If he wants to play XBOX Live, he just flips a switch and it goes back to "factory mode". I don't know much about it, but there are tons of things you can do with it.

net flix not an option - Canada. Great idea though for those who watch a lot.

Panasonic DVD player....thinking of it, hence the thread. Just thinking, if I got to buy one, and a Xbox ain't much more...why not?

I have seen a couple of Modded Xbox's and none played MP3s that I am aware of. Although some had such large hard drives that people had ripped TONS of songs to them.

There is an digital audio cable connection set for the XBox as well. Why they didn't just put a toslink port on the Xbox I do not know

Also a good friend I know swears that Modding their Xbox was "SO worth it" but these guys are the same ones who have their computer HD patched to their reciever to play music, and have 6 or 7 different consoles hooked up and still run everything through a VCR(for some inane reason) and have 6 different remotes and no one can run their A/V system but them it's so Bassackwards. So their logic is a little flawed.

a progressive scan DVD player is useless unless you have an HD-ready TV.

I've noticed a difference with using component-level video inputs with my Toshiba DVD player, but saw no difference with a progressive-scan DVD player.

Hmmmmm...... looks pretty well designed.

I guess I just can't get into for the simple reason that it seems so "garage". Not that DIY isn't great, but when it comes to my Home Theatre and my all my A/V systems in general I want them to be clean, linear and easy for anyone to use. All that file support is VERY cool (OGG would be nice if it had more support)but between my TV(Jpeg and AVI Via Memory stick slot.) DVD player(DVD,VCD,MP3,DTS-DVD,DVD-A),my Tivo and regular PS2 and Xbox I have all the file support I need.

I breifly read the article and didn't see the answer to this. Do you need a box running Linux to upload the software?(thats the accepted way to hack Tivos)

a progressive scan DVD player is useless unless you have an HD-ready TV.

Thats pretty much true NOW. Two years ago when Progressive Scan meant more expensive, a DVD player with progressive scan usually also meant a Faroujda chip and lots off other high end components so there was a viewable difference in PS and a normal DVD player. Not from the PS capability itself but it was inherent in PS machines

don't need linux. Just a windows based machine, and you ftp to it using your xbox using your lan, or wireless( adapter for it) and trasnfer from everything to it.

download this video ( 73 megs though) and you'll be able to see what it really can do. very impressive. complete media center for movies, mp3's, pictures, you name it. And it looks just like MS's media centre...so much so it's funny.

I'm answering my own questions again :(

O have an un-modded X-box. Won't play any burnt CD's/DVD's, but, you can save all your CD's that are purchased to the hardrive, and listen to them either just to listen, or most games allow you to play the music during gameplay. It holds alot of memory, as I have about 10 full CD's, and It still reads as it did when I bought it. I love my X-box, and I think it's better than PS2, in some aspects, but others the PS2 is better. Some games for the PS2 only are good, but same for some X-box only games. However, I really hate the fact that I had to buy a remote for it to watch DVD's, but oh well. I plan on modding it in the future
