wrx swap into a 99 2.5rs

yeah good point. i really wanted a wrx but i was thinking that this would be cheaper. I JUST WANT MORE POWER AND AWD!!!!!!! :'(:'(:'(

any reason you would go with a 98 2.5RS?

I picked up a 99 2.5RS this past fall for a commuter/beater so i just kno a little from research about em........

If you are going with a 98, then you are gonna need a new front bumper for the 2.5rs look I imagine you are going for, you are swapping in a new engine, why not save some bucks and get a non RS impreza, perhaps even an older year?

If you move up to 99 then you get a better motor (course this doesnt pertain to you since u are swapping it out) comes with the front bumper you probably want, and a couple little neat things like the clear headlights which look better IMO...

if you pick up the most recent SCC they have a how-to for a wrx motor swap. They say it is pretty much plug and play in any outback, legacy, or impreza from pretty much any model year until you go before like 95 or something and then its only a matter of a wiring headache......in the article they swap it into a legacy i beleive but they say its the same for all of em

best of luck to ya! if fast AWD is your goal then this is the way to go (or turbo 2.5rs motor), but I liked the p5 loaner I had more than I like my GC8.......course that could be due to mileage and stuff but at any rate, if i coulda gotten a p5 instead of my impreza, even tho it woulda been less useful for winter driving, im pretty sure i would have.

you would probably make more power if you turboed the 2.5l motor im thinking...they come with around 170hp/trq right? you would obviously be making more torque with this motor turboed...

yes, but it does make 170 lbs of torque stock i think, imagine the 2.5l turboed off the line, it would be sweet with alot of torque...

haha..you don't want a used wrx man, unless it has a warranty for at least 40k more miles...most likely it had been abused to s***..

i bet 90 percent of people with a wrx abuse it, thats what they are for, find a dirt road with hills and have at it!!

one of my friends wore out the brakes on his used wrx in a month. 18k miles with the previous owner and no problems with the brakes. 2000 miles and 1 month later, the brakes were gone

The current issue of SCC has a tech writeup about doing a swapping a Ej20 into a older Impreza.

why do u want a 2.5 so bad?
it allot better to get a 1993 AWD L model for like $1500
and put all the extra $$ u saved back into the car...
and the wireing for the ecu;s are diff. for subaru turbo engines and no turbo, and its the hardest part to figure out. it takes at leats 20hrs to do and thats if u know how to do everything exactly(have done it before).
its about 6-7K to do a swap... trust me ive looked into this MANY MANY times. and is my ultimate dream(currently)

Wasen't the STi motor based on the 2.5 RS motor?
Same displacement but that is where the similarities end.

To do a swap is relatively easy except for the harness. That took my buddy about 40 hours to do correctly.

Check out this thread for swap info: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=386462

Good luck. I know my buddy that did the swap loves it because the 2.5RS is so much lighter than a WRX.

Roy, just sell the P5 and save up some cash and buy a WRX. I debated and debated the swap/turbo RS idea and the WRX was just a better cheaper more reliable choice.

That is freakin awsome(wow)

it makes me ssssooooo hard just thinking about that kit. I have never actually heard of / seen anybody with that kit installed.

also worth noting.......i was in my 99rs on the way to work today when a 04 wrx passed me...........if the wrx was the same price as the 99rs, and the wrx had 0 miles and the rs had 100k...........i sincerely doubt i would even consider the wrx......they just look so terrible without significant work imo.
