Wow - what sound... what is this?

what a bunch of mary's..... lol. i will concur its hard to get a 4 banger sounding good, but the racing beat is hands down one of the best i've heard for a NA 4 cylinder application.

x- if you think that sounds like farts, me thinks you haven't delved into the world of aftermarket exhaust systems much.

That's a funny argument. Yeah, they all sound bad, but this is the best of them.

I'm comparing it to the sweet sounds of a V-8 or a flat six with less restrictive pipes-- pure music.

um, you might wanna refresh your reading comprehension.... "hard to get sounding good" doesn't = bad.

of course an 8 will sound better, or a high revving 6.

turbo 4s can sound good... WRX with their unequal headers, new porsche's despite the purists scoffing at the loss of the 6.

i bet the lower trim guilia sounds fine.

You guys have forgotten what the stock exhaust sounds like. Granted, the 2.5 SkyActiv G engine from Mazda is not exactly their best sounding engine. I will argue that their previous gen MZR engines sounded really good with a catback exhaust. Still, the Racing Beat exhaust sound/tone is still an improvement over stock in my opinion.

Edit: In my opinion, the Mazdaspeed3 with the 2.3 Turbocharged MZR engine is one of the best sounding inline 4 engines, especially when paired with a Corksport or Magnaflow catback exhaust.

That's why I didn't use quotation marks! But that was the gist of your statement. I guess your idea of "sounding good" is very different from mine. To each their own. There's no accounting for taste.

true! but like i said earlier... at idle the stock CX5 sounds really weak... and lame. but then again it is a toaster.

finch- somehow forgot about the speed 3. my buddies sounded good, even with stock exhaust. he had an aftermarket on it when he bought it but had it swapped out before i had a chance to ride in it.

I agree about the CX-5 sounding weak when idling. I mean yes it is idling, but it doesn't have to sound like that. Contrast that to a car with a good sounding exhaust and idling is almost like music to my ears.

The Speed3 has a nice sounding rumble, not quite the same as a Subaru Boxer 4, but it has a notable rumble because of the design of the OEM exhaust manifold.

regarding the CX5, what also really bothered me for some reason was when the car was running (idling), and say my GF got out to get the mail and left the passenger door open. Man-o-man, the exhaust somehow caused the pressure in the cabin to increase, and thus bother my head. Or that's at least what it felt like... but i hated sitting in it while it was running with a door open.

I've never noticed this on any other vehicle in my life.

Personally not on my cars but I've heard aftermarket exhausts and they sound a lot better on V8's and to a less extent on 6 cylinders. On 4s doesn't improve it much IMHO

It sounds weak when idling because that is what the market wants. Soon as its either rough or loud, people always complain.

True. I think we all have to keep reminding ourselves that the CX5 is a very nice grocery getter and the modding angle is fairly limited. The RB exhaust, I like what it does and how it sounds. If I have a profitable spring, I'll probably have one by summer. It is one of those things that sets your car apart from everyone else's, just like putting on a set of aftermarket wheels, or in my case put yellow lamin-x film on my fog lights. It ain't going to win you any drag races unless you put a bigger motor or turbo on it and then, pick your battles wisely.

The silent majority! Only motorheads want to hear a deep, rich [not necessarily loud, and certainly not JUST loud] exhaust. And that includes me. No doubt the Racing Beat can sounds better in person than on Youtube.... This thread makes me want to hear more. Just because I've never heard a good sounding 4 cyl doesn't mean they don't exist!

But if it doesn't give you more power or greater efficiency, I wouldn't bother on a [non-high performance] 4 cyl.

The Racing Beat exhaust for the CX-5 is really just an axle-back exhaust. So there are very minimal gains and their dyno results shows minimal to insignificant gains. This is purely a "improves driving experience" aural type of mod and not a performance mod.

Think Chris_Top_Her's CX-5 would win races!

ECU chip could do this without sounding weird

I have reached the point of my life where I prefer some quiet - that's why at the time I bypassed the first KE CX-5 and went for Mazda 6 (less road, engine noise) and now am moving to the even quieter KF CX-5

I can see your points. Similarly, as I've aged, one of the reasons I traded in my 4Runnner was cuz I was sick of the body on frame ride. And the road noise of my 2014 3 HB was abhorrent. Also gone.

But the automobile sounds I want to appreciate while driving are engine wailing, turbo whoosh and exhaust rumble, crackling and popping. Just not all that in a CX5. Doesn't mean I don't think the CX5 could use a little bit more to accommodate its supposed sporty nature and distinguish itself from its plebeian competition.

those new Jags with their machine gun sounding exhausts are ear porn.

Fair points as well.

I still enjoy the rumbling sound of a big V8 or now adays a Twin Turbo V8

If you want crackling, try AMG Mercs with their Twin Turbo V8's!
