I'm glad they are seriously considering it. It goes to show they really care about the our performance enthusiast still.

I would MUCH rather see the two door hatchback come to the states than a speed version. But for you performance enthusiasts, yeah sure, why not.

If you hate practicality, just weld your two rear doors shut. Done.

Hate? Hate Practicality? The two door doesn't have the same interior space? I guess I don't get it. While we're at let's make the Corvette more practical and add a couple more doors.

Non-sequitor. The Corvette does not have rear seats. The rear doors on the 5-door 2 are for accessing the rear seats.

....right and the conclusion (non sequitur) that I hated practicality was a little presumptuous. Of course what I meant was that 2 door cars have a more sporty look than the same model with 4 doors. It's always been that way. The reason the Chevrolet Sonic conceals its rear door handles to give the illusion that it is a 2 door.

I should have chosen a better example than a Corvette but we can all agree that it is a sleek sports/performance car and how silly that it would look with another set of doors.

If Mazda also offered the Mazda 2 two doors (in the states), I would imagine that it would be overwhelming that the performance enthusiasts would not have even considered the 4 door. All things being equal that is. Just saying.

Yes, my response was sarcastic. But my point was and still is that the Mazda2 is not a swoopy sports coupe, and does not have a roofline that makes cutting in rear doors either impractical or impossible. In the case of the 2, it would have exactly the same roofline, belt line, etc. whether it was 3 doors or 5. Seeing an additional seam and door handle does not in any way (at least to my eye) compromise the look of the car. My opinion is that if a car has a usable back seat, with usable headroom, kneeroom, etc - it should have doors to access them. Who really wants to tilt their seat forward to allow access to the back seats... in a b-segment economy car? I can understand it in a real sports coupe, with compromised, occasional-use-only back seats, but that's not what we're talking about here.

Of course I would have no objection to Mazda offering us both. But if they were going to only offer one, I think they made the right choice with the 5-door.

In fact, more than once I've had someone who will be riding in the back seat wait for me to open my door and get out of the way because they don't realize the car has 4 doors. And they're standing right next to the thing.

Lol, what? They make sporty 4 door variants all the time and they sell great. M3 is a good example. SVT Focus was sold as both a 4 door and 2 door. Yaris was also sold as both. Door don't determine "sport."

Yea... like the WRX, STI, and evo have all been big flops.

OK fine - the BMW M5 outsells the M6 by a significant margin.

Sorry - outsold (when it was still in production)

Well, I'm not sure that works either. Aren't the M5 and M6 different cars? The M3 is a solid example because they literally make the same performance and trim of car but with a choice of coupe or sedan. I can't think of any other solid examples at the moment.

I think it's smart to sell as many different body configurations as a company can afford to setup tooling for. The Focus was the last great "get it in any shape possible" car around. Hatch, Sedan, 5 door hatch, wagon, coupe (in the later years). That's a s*** ton of different configurations and it sold great because of it.

They were pretty much the same car, just different body style. The M6 was a bit more expensive though.

HAHA, that's happened with my friends a few times. It's amusing.
