Worth it to Mod Autos??

yeah, funny thing was that i was trying to overtake a car to my right to get to the freeway, which i was able to do easily, while this guy on my left was trying to overtake me...he failed...

ive been modding my auto p5 and i find that its completely worth it...for now, im staying n/a but im still getting a huge rush from it...for example, the other day at a stop light that heads to the freeway on-ramp, this stock escort pulled up next to me to overtake me to get to the ramp...long story short, he had wheelhop and crappy ass acceleration...thats what i think makes it completely worth all the modding, even though its just an auto...
So making other cars wheel hop makes an auto worth it? :p

well, at least it makes me feel a whole less miserable about the auto...his car sounded like it was an auto too...so at least its not too bad...

Wow this is the fastest growing thread I have seen.

Basically dont listen to anyone here about an auto proteges potential. Why you ask? Because no one has ever put forth a good effort to beef up the tranny and see what it can do. We know lentechs focus runs 11s in the 1/4 mile and that tranny is 99.9% identical to ours. We all know if auto ran a manual with the same whp in the 1/4 mile the auto would win. For one autos build boost at 0mph, two autos shift faster, and three you dont lose boost between shifts. Note im talking about a modded tranny not a stock one.

Right now the pioneer with the auto tranny is lil freak. He is gonna be testing lentech products on his car to see if they fit. Im close behind him on that front

Now contrary to the others on the forum you wont need 5000$ in mods to hold 150whp. Some of the basic mods lil freak was talking about are under 500$ and can be installed with hand tools. For instance the valve bodies, tranny cooler, synthetic tranny oil. The torque converter and clutch pack would need professional installation. but with just those basic things listed above anything under 200whp should be doable.

Also I believe you would be safer running a supercharger on a auto considering the SC gradually adds power and doesnt dump it all at once like a turbo. Check out the WOMP SC in my sig. Ill be one of the guinea pigs for the auto guys.

DAMN! i leave the forums to watch a show, and come back, and get all this. Thanks for the quick responses guys. A LOT of the stuff you all mentioned are very helpful for me, and i'm sure it will be very helpful for many other people as well.

I think the basic E/I/H mods are gonna go on the car, and i'll see from there what i want to do. But yes, the thought of passing other cars with ease is always a plus. Or even racing cars, while holding your slurpee cup outside the window, something Pirana said a while ago if i'm right, sounds funny as hell too.

hahah this thread is funny, but yeah the auto tranny can take some punishment, i have an auto w/ hiboost kit and i run 6 psi daily, no mods to the tranny yet (no cash) i run 8 psi not too often but i do every once and awhile. the only thing i've noticed is the tranny is really weak while its shifting so you gotta let off when it shifts (don't bother boosting on a stock tranny if you don't have the tiptronic) also on some freeway runs i've done at 8 psi if you're on it too much and the tranny overheats it will actually lock you out of the manual mode and shift by itself until it cools off, it still says you're in manual and it shows the gear its in but the shifter doesn't do anything when you move it up and down. freaked me out the first time it did it, (only done it twice) so now i don't do a s*** load of freeway pulls in the same session. i need a tranny cooler...

EDIT: I've had the kit for 10 months ~15k miles now maybe 18k not positive

good to see this thread has settled down a bit. good.

anyway, i'm a bit surprised there was only 1 post about what i wrote before.

swapping the final drive gearing out might be a big job (i have no idea), but gearing like a manual 1-2-3-5 would make the auto one hell of a :giggle: family car. j/k - auto's and manuals both have their good and bad points

Hi guys,

I'm in the search for a planetary gearset that should atleast make the autos in-gear accelleration equal to that of the manuals, possibly equal for a standing start with a stalled launch too? The search is proving very difficult though... lowering the gear ratio won't make my auto any stronger, but will give me on-par performance with other NA manuals atleast.
Just wondering if you FI guys know where the wear is occuring in the autos anyway? If the valve bodies and torque convertor are upgraded, is that all that is needed? I assume the stock rings and belts will suffer badly from more power aswell, and may need the Lentech overhall kit?
Another thing, Can the auto take raising the rev limit to 7000-7500rpm? This will give the 1.8 the same or better power output as a 2.0L with 6500rpm limit. The 1.8 is happier to do it too!

Making the most of an ordinary situation,
Chicaboo.

also on some freeway runs i've done at 8 psi if you're on it too much and the tranny overheats
I'm not boosted but I still installed a cooler. I also have a temp guage for the trans that I need to install.

I find that off the start my/the auto sucks. Once it's up past 3000 then it pulls nicely. Reving it in neutral then dropping it in drive is about the only way to get it to pull hard off the start but no way in hell am I gonna do that.

yeah this is in the NA Tech section and it just got bombd with forced induction posts (jacked)

I'm having alot of fun with my ride. I don't think my p5 is sluggish of the line either. Regardless of what others may think, my mods have certainly made a difference from stock. I've grown to accept the A/T. Actually, I like it alot. My ride pulls like hell, I think so anyway, and everything is working in perfect harmony right now. From a standing start, with one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas, when I release the brake I can spin the s*** out of my wheels or I can launch just perfect. Depends on how hard I step on the gas when I release the brake. I've practiced alot to find the right response for take-off. If A/T is your thing, then go for it. I'm happy. Others might feel it's a waste, but I did it for myself. Turbo charged or not, there will always be way faster cars than what you can put together( MT or A/T). I built my p5 to be faster, not to be the fastest car out there. I enjoy my ride, and spreading a good attitude towards everyone, regardless of their opinion towards me and my ideas. I hope I helped you out and good luck with your project. Peace.

read the n/a threads. highest they are at is only 130 hp or something. i dont think thats worth the time and money they put into it.

Someone else who knows nothing of what they are talking about.

thanks for pointing that out... went off topic. sorry.

anyway, i still stand by if u want a faster car, buy one that u know has potential, not a car that is still being tested and experimented on.

peace

I/H/E is a great way to goost your car's speed. No doubt about it. But adding cams, cam gears, midpipe, and udp will add up fast. If I were to go this route, I'd be looking at around 1700 for the build (I'm very picky about what I put on my car as some here may know). So I figure for roughly twice that, I can have a supercharger that alone will increase hp by more than two times that of the mods listed above. And that leaves room for later expansion via midpipe and catback exhaust.
