Winter Wheels, MP3 pulling blah blah blah

Well I put my winter wheels on today. Blech. I've got 195/60R15 Cooper Radial GTs on 15 inch steels. Total cost was about $380 US. My girlfriend's dad (the mechanic) has helped me through all of this by mounting the tires and getting discounts.

Its really quite sad how much the handling has changed :( ... The Dunlops are insanely better than any all-weather tires we could ever put on our cars. Oh well, at least we'll save on wear and tear.

Anyhow, I talked to my girl's dad about the issues with the car pulling to the right. Now, my car pulls to the right, but it also pulls to the left when on the left side of the street. He confirmed the fact that our cars are going to do this. He said our alignments are fine, and it is partly caused by torque steer with all front-wheel drive cars. He also mentioned that most daily driver cars are set up to handle a 2-degree angle for the road (due to roads being angled for drainage), while our cars are probably tuned to be flat. This would allow the tires to rest completely flat on the ground and give us the best possible traction and even tread wear.

I think everybody that is freaked out about their cars pulling need to realize that there are tradeoffs with everything you do. Stiffen the suspension, add low-pro tires, and you get a bumpy ride. Adjust the camber to be flat, and you get some pulling. You just have to deal with it...

P.S. Did I mention how ugly 15" steels are? Blech! ;)

Thanks Doomer. Here in Hawaii the roads are angled a lot more than on the mainland to deal with the heavy monsoon rains. I only have 3,000 miles on my car and I can already see tire wear. I'm worried that I'll be replacing tires every 10 to 15,000 miles if this keeps up. And these tires aren't cheap. I love the handling of our cars, but I can't afford to keep replacing tires.

Swimmer:

The tread life for the Dunlop is about 12,000 miles, or so I have been told...So expect to change tires. You can get harder tires and get better tread life, but soft rubber just doesn't last that long.

I got 195/65R14 Nokian tires. The handling is s***. The braking is s***. I peel all the time. I feel like I'm driving on a road made of rubber.
I can't wait till I get these winter tires off.

I'm at 4000KM in 4 months, and barely have any wear on the dunlops at all. Man I love those tires.

I got a set of Michelin Artic Alpins for winter and a set of steel wheels for winter, just got them on last weekend. I notice a change in traction but hopefully that will change in a few weeks when we get some snow.

I am glad I live in Texas. I don't have this winter tires ordeal to put up with. No snow or anything here, it rarely gets below 45 in the winter. Got to love that. Sorry to hear about all your troubles guys but as someone said, you are extending your tire life by switching them.

I cant believe the SP9000s will only last 12000 miles. I have about 4500 miles on mine and there is hardly any tread wear on them except for the inside of the front tires from turning. They have a treadwear rating of 280!! I know you can't compare treadwear ratings between brands very well, but I've heard of 220s going for 30,000 miles...

Some of you guys must be driving like maniacs :D
