Winter tires/rims?

Any advantages to going with 14's vs 15's other then price? 185 is skinnier then the 195's usually listed for 15's IMO I was always told that a skinnier tire did better in the snow/ice but that's just the old man's opinion, never really had a chance to check it out. Though my old Tempo with 185's was one of the better winter beaters I've ever had, never did get that stuck.

The skinnier tire is another advantage....the skinnier tire will slice thru the snow much better than a wider tire.

14" 626 steelies worked fine for me on my p5 I still had one as a full size spare...

Damn....didn't know you were running the 626 wheels for winter. Good to know that they will indeed fit.

You guys misunderstand. I had one as a full size spare leftover from my 626. But I used it on the front and rear of the p5, so it's good all around. And when I tried to find steelies, it was going to be as much as inexpensive alloys from tire rack. So I spent a bit more and got wheels I really like.

(hand) You got us both Ryan....lol I was reading it that you had a full set + one. hahahaha Either way you have confirmed they fit and I picked my winter wheels for $100. They are steelies and not the prettiest thing in the world but funciton > form. I've seriously thougt about spraying them bronze. :)

Heck Ebay has them for $30 shipped, can't go wrong with that. Good to know that 14 inchers fit and might even be better for the snow. Not sure how I've made it through 8 winters now on various falken's and the stocks. I know last year I went through nearly 1000lbs of sand/salt on my driveway. (I have a very steep driveway) This year will be the experiment with winter tires I think.

bronze would be sweet jeff...

As long as you realise you are on narrow winter tires and drive like it you will be fine. I am running 195 vs 205, but 185 isn't *that* narrow.

Yeah....trying to get Tam on board.... She thinks it will look horrible and said she wouldn't drive the car......(gah)

185 isn't too bad....like Roy said, you just gotta remember to take the twisties with a little care.

I just ordered a set of 185/70/14's, now to find some rims :)

Nice....what did you get and where? I just got the new tirerack winter catalog in the mail yesterday and was checking out the Continental Extreme Winter Contacts....$67ea!!!

I'd call some local junkyards if you don't mind steelies...should be able to find some and for cheap. If you want alloys, I've found them on ebay but after shipping was looking around $400 for 14's!! Ah hell no! lol

I got a set of General Altimax Artic tires from Discount Tire Direct. They seem to have good reviews and they are the cheapest of the bunch so I figured why not?

I initially went to tirerack because they had them for $52 each and their shipping estimate to my house was $96. Sweet, $300 for a set of tires that would cost me over $500 at Canadian Tire. It was only till I was ready to checkout that they added a bunch of taxes and other random fees to bring the total close to $400. F-that. I figured I'd just get them shipped to the forwarding company I use in NY, but they wanted $50 for shipping.

I was about to do it when a friend mentioned discount tire direct, they had them for $59 shipped (to NY, to my house it would have been $160 extra) so I went with them. I called to make the order and the guy was nice enough to sell me them for $54 each after hearing about the tirerack shenanigans.

All in all it should cost me less than $300 (PST, GST, and maybe a 7% duty). I'm kinda pissed that I have to go get them myself, but it's still a hell of a lot cheaper than buying them in town.

I don't mind steelies at all but I've seen a few listings on kijiji for 626 mags for less than $100 so hopefully I can get some of those. Otherwise there's a place near my house that normally has used steelies for $20 a piece.

Once again, thanks for all your help and advice!

Damn...that's a crazy story. DTD is awesome to work with....that is where I've purchased my last six sets of tires from. As you have found out first hand they are very customer service oriented.

GL finding those alloys!

dude, go on: tireseasy.com

they sell hankook snow tires in size: 195-50-16 for 80 bucks a tire. thats what i run in the winter sir. Check 'em out, their pretty cool......and cheap.

Got any pics of the car with the rims? What size tires did you end up getting 70 or 65?

I'll see if I can get a pic tonight (it was too dark this morning). The rims came with some 195/65R14 summer tires (which is what I'm using atm), and the winter tires I bought are 185/70R14 (roughly the same size).

That would be great, I just want to see what those rims look like on the car, I can get either those or steelies for nearly the same price at a local junkyard and am wondering if it's worth it.
Thanks!
