Windshield noise

At work and don't really have a lot of time to search, but I wanted to ask...

This morning was about the coolest it's ben since I got the car (right at 60 degrees), and when I was driving, I kept hearing a sound I hadn't heard before. It sounded almost like light rain hitting the windshield. (Obviously it wasn't raining at all...). I thought (maybe I'm wrong) that someone had before mentioned some kind of windshield noise with the 3's. Is this the case with mine, and is it cold weather related? Is it a serious problem and is there a fix for it?

Links to another thread will be fine. I'll check back when I can. Thanks!

The windshield cowl tick is the single most annoying thing about this car by far.

+111111!!

It got down to like 46 degrees here one day last week and it started! I really enjoyed the last 5-6 months without hearing that. O well, guess the radio just goes up louder or thr extra thick electrical tape mod fix will be in order!

or you can have the Correct TSB fix done by a dealer for FREE....but who wants to have it done the correct way when you can do it at home with some tape!

Like Kain said, others have reported it coming back or never actually going away after the TSB fix. 10 or so dollars and minutes on a sunday afternoon is better than leaving work early for a maybe fix.

but yes, dealer will fix or attempt to. If i cant fix it myself then ill succomb to a dealer visit.

Is this for the front or rear windshield?
the plastic cowl above the rear windshield on my 09 has started to make super annoying clicking sounds now that it has started to get cold. I took the piece of trim off (the center plastic bar) and drove around without the noise so I'm pretty sure that's the problem.
No noises from the front.

Front.

Mine was fixed via TSB. However, the dealer doubled up on the padding that Mazda was using for the TSB fix. They accidentally ordered two sets for my appt. and went ahead and put them both on. Rattle free all of last winter...and hopefully this one, too.

remove the two screws at the base of the windshield, use a 2" paint scraper to lift up the cowl, put some electrical tape (the stuff I used was called rubber mastic tape) between the glass and plastic. Trim the excess with a razor blade. FIXED

I did this and it worked like a champ. I posted pics in one of the earlier threads.

I tried this but was having crappy luck shoving the mastic tape underneath the cowl, even with a paint scraper. May just set aside one morning to remove the cowl completely, tape the s*** out of the base of the windshield, and reassemble.

Unfortunately, some people have reported the tick coming back after time even with the TSB.

Yup, had mine done last summer just before the winter and now the darned ticking noise is back with a vengeance.

Might just have to give the mastic tape a shot soon as well.

wow! I just realized this problem in my speed a few weeks ago. Thanks for the thread! and off to the dealer

That'd fix it? Damn it, I had the cowl out last week to run the power wire, shouda fixed it back then. Mine had gone in to the dealer to get the TSB done. It was quiet for a few days, but it came back like a stubborn SOB now that the temps have been in the teens this whole week.

Yep.........mine is back.......going to dealer in the morning. I want to be there when they fix it this time.

I take back my above post........I'll likely fire up the garage heater to 72 degrees and do this after she gets a nice bath.

It reached the point of total nervewrackingness today, with overnight temps dropping into the 20's.

I went to Home Depot today and bought a roll of https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned) and (painfully) stuffed it under the entire length of the cowl. I drove around the main street of the apartment complex at 30MPH and heard no noise, so it's at least an improvement. Before, I could hear this s*** if I was puttering along at 5! Late tonight when the roads are emptier I'm gonna drive some 45MPH city roads and get on the interstate and see what happens. So far, so good, though.

I really wanted to remove the cowl so I could clean it and hit every possible spot, but those wipers are goddamn impossible to get off.
