Ok i have a computer question.

My moms Compaq has been acting up for a long while. Now that im back home in Michigan for a bit im trying to fix it. I want to just wipe the hard drive and reload only the programs she needs on it, but she did not keep any of her original system disks. I've found a Windows 98 cd at a friend's house, but i think its just an upgrade cd. It doesn't say upgrade on it at all, but i tried to run it and it wasnt a restore disk like i thought.

Here's my question. Can i just run the disk i found and have it wipe my mom's harddrive like a system restore cd? or do i need to find another window's 98 cd?

Its been a while, but if I remember correctly, you will need a Win95 CD as well if you are using a 98 upgrade CD. Somewhere in the install it will ask for your previous OS CD.

Agree with element, just go and find one for under 20 bux. The upgrades will not work without 95 cd's.

Actually just get rid of 98 all together and bring your mom up into the modern age....go on eBay and buy a WinXP Pro os for just a little and then wipe the hard drive clean and install XP. Just remember if you go this route...you will need to do one of two things...either go into the set up and ensure that your CD drive is bootable and the first thing checked...or you can use a win98 boot disc to set up the cd drive at the begining...and then just reload everything from scratch....

sorry to dispute the last post, but going on ebay to buy an OS Win XP disk is not a great idea. If you go to dell's website, and buy an average computer without the monitor you prolly would pay 400ish bucks whereas the CD would prolly cost 100+. think about the long term. its your mom, buy her the new computer.

well he does have a point....if she is dealing with a computer that is still running 98 its probably time to retire it anyway...pop for your mom a new box!

but in defence...if you do your homework... I actually found a computer business doing online sales through ebay....I recieved a FACTORY SEALED LICENCED copy of XP pro that was all above board, and legal. NO PROBLEM...you just have to be careful and do your homework.
