Will just putting good speakers in my P5 help?

Will someday upgrade the head unit, but will just putting a stock size speaker all around make much difference until I can put in a head unit? Thanks guys...

It will definitely help, but IMO you really need to replace both to make a difference that's worth the money. Just make sure you get good speakers, don't buy the cheapest speakers you can find, because you'll just be wasting money on nearly no difference in sound.

i would say, dont do just the speakers.

the stock ones (as crappy as they are) are made to be paired up with the low powered deck. adding better speakers without giving them more power will make you worse off because they are less efficient (because they are made with better, heavier materials), and often times have a response that is designed to have less bass, with better focus on other notes, because its expected that they will be paired up with a sub

the best analogy i can think of is to imagine speakers are "cars" and the deck is the motor

the 2l in your mp5 is an adequate motor for that car. but if you put the 2l in say...a bmw m5. the bmw would be worse off, then even the original mp5 was, even though the m5 is a better chassis then the mp5...it just also needs a bigger motor to make the advantages come into play.

hopefully my ramblings made some sort of sense

As bfowler mentioned, the stock stereo and stock speakers are a mated pair. The stock stereo produces maybe 7 watts of power and the stock speakers are designed to play loudly under low power.

Replace the head unit and leave the speakers and you'll be sending 15-30 watts to speakers that can realistically only handle 10. You'll rip the paper surrounds apart after extended listening at loud levels. The sound will be a little cleaner at low levels, but it won't take long for you to destroy the speakers and make the sound far worse than it ever was.

Replace the speakers and not the head unit and you'll be sending 7 watts to speakers designed to run on 30-100 watts. The stock stereo will not be able to excite your new speakers in the bass department as efficiently as it did with the stock speakers. You'll hear cleaner highs, but much less lows.

Replace both the head unit and the speakers and you'll have a system that sounds better across the board and will play louder when you want it to without risk of damaging the equipment.
