Why doesnt Mazda want us to upgrade?

i just got done looking at a Srt forum. it really made me mad because it had a list of Mopar upgrades that are gonna be available soon for the car. It was a pretty long list including BOV, turbo upgrades, intake, and even a turbo timer. I dont understand y Mazda doesnt make ANY parts for this car to upgrade. I would think that they would us to be able to improve on what they have already gave us w/ this car. instead all i hear from my dealer is DO NOT REPLACE ANYTHING on this car. blah blah. its just weird, there are NO companies w/ adapter kits for a new BOV, no companies offering a wiring harness for the turbo timer, and almost NO MAGAZINE COVERAGE on this car. does any1 agree w/ me????

Twizted now you are speaking my language!

YEAH:wtf: Every other car on earth has some sort of manufacturer or aftermarket support??I know this is a limited run car but DAMN ,come on MAZDA !Get with the times or you will lose some potential customers in the future. Can you say I wont buy a Mazdaspeed RX-8 without some sort of support.Or what about the 6,I bet they get some goodies!I bet if we all wrote a letter to mazda presenting our views maybe they would lighten up on the "ANYTHING WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY" mentality.

ANYONE ELSE????

That's a great point. Let's start a petition and see what we can do. (worth a shot) Let's show them the meaning of "quality vs quantity". There may only be 2000 MSP owners... but together we should be able to get something accomplished.

I would imagine that mazda would make all aftermarket parts void your warrenty except for actual mazdaspeed parts that are installed by an autherized mazdaspeed dealer (like acura/comtech and toyota/TRD). I have a bad feeling, however, that Mazdaspeed aftermaket support will consist of a bunch of weak crap like axle back exhausts, lowering springs, hats and T-shirts:mad: It takes a while to make things happen in big companies like mazda and if they were planning anything big for mazdaspeed parts, we would of heard somthing by now. Dodge was displaying the mopar upgrades for the SRT-4 before the car was even available for sale! I've been waiting for my titanium speed to come since Nov. and I am seriously doubting whether I want ot purchase a car from a company like mazda. I hope I am wrong. I want to love Mazda and the MS protege but they are making it very hard for me to believe in them.

its not mazda's fault . ford will not ok the money for added support.when the new engines come out next year that have the "duratec" badge on them you will see a TON of aftermarket parts available real quick. as far as the fs motors well we have to do with what we got from the old tuners of probes and 626's but plenty of us will be selling some nice upgrades soon. including tranny parts we all can afford. hang in there man:D

Another reason why Mazda doesn't offer upgrades is because there really isn't a strong platform to build on. The SRT4 has an engine with all forged internals designed for additional boost. The MSP is just a regular Protege engine with a turbo slapped on and a little tuning. I'm sure Mazda doesn't want to be spending money on warranty work because their aftermarket parts hand-grenaded engines. The MSP is a wonderfully handling car all around, but if you want more power from the engine be prepared to spend serious $$.

I don't think the lack of support has anything to do with the engine and heres why, PS put on your tall boots becuase its going to get real deep in here :D!

The Suspension:
First lets look at the suspensioon on the MSP and MP3 whihc is where these cars are praised the most. Greatly tuned but NOT BY MAZDA. Racing beat did the suspension then Mazda ***** it and hacked so bad the rear bushings give way, clunk like hell and the handling numbers go to s***. I can't even imagine how much money Mazda lossed on that one in replacement bushings and they are only now working on a fix but ONLY in Canada. So we have a car that handles great for a month then the suspension wears out and the perfomance numbers obviously subside.

The Turbo:
Mazda agian could not do this on there own and had to go to Callaway for a turbo. Mazda however did restrict callaway to a pathetic intercooler becuse it was a mazda part thus restricting the turbo and power potential of the car. Add to this that the ECU was tuned like crap for the tubo. Basicly it just rich as hell. No real tuning was ever done by mazda on these cars to ensure good perfomance just engine reliability against knock to a retarded extream.

The Exhuast:
Mazda has always knoe the reason the power perfomance on the Protege wasn't great was the first cat design that restricts everything up in the exhuast. With it inline any exhuast won't do much good. They are obviousl;y not going to scrap it now as the production on these cars is coming to an end. Thus anything other then a muffler added on won't do much more anyways and isn't worth the money. Thus on goes a shinny racing beat muffler and tip to give a 1% better flow and a nice exhuast tone.

Lets recap!
Mazda Didn't ever really do any of the work. They ****** up or restricted the work that Racing Beat and Callaway did. They never even properly tuned the PCM for the Tubo. The cars was NEVER intended for power.
These reasons are why you will never see Mazda factory support of there cars. Its just not worth it to them and they frankly don't know what the hell there doing!

Ah, mazdadan sees the big picture! Like he said, these engines werent originally intended to be turbocharged, Dodge's where, hence the abundance of factory available parts.

Perfworks is right.

When I bought my 323GT limited production Mazda, there wasnt a lot of aftermarket parts offered either. In fact far less then the speeds, but threw Mazda Fans with common goals many performance parts were developed. When I ordered my forged pistons, I had to send a sample to Aries so that it could be blue printed and filed. I had the same problem with the Potter rods. If you need some forged rods or pistons today for a 323 turbo, the specs are on file. The same applies the Speed, once owners take first step & put forward interest and request for more aftermarket parts, they will become more readily available. Soon Speed down pipes will be made threw various different sources as apposed to a group buy thru one custom builder. Patients and dedication are the keys here, Im sure MP3 & PR5 owners went thru the same thing. In fact when I bought my 98 protg ES, I couldnt even get a set of springs for it, and now there are tons of parts for it.

When the Spec V came out it had like zero mods for it as well. Sometimes new cars don't have mods! Just give it time and there will be a load of stuff.
As for the bit about Mazda not knowing what they are doing.....blah blah blah......
They knew enough to get us blokes to buy it!

Mazda slipped!

I think mazda slipped! Why even waste time with our 2.0L high compression engines when they have the j-spec 1.8 bp turbo motor from the 323GTR w/ factory ballbearing turbo = 210hp. I think that would have been the right move for Mazda. I think Ford is making bad choices for Mazda.

Their view is probably more like "well, we've already DONE the mods for you". Look at their catalog - they have everything available for the stock Protege and P5 owner to "upgrade" their cars to Mazdaspeed spec - in their view that's the pinnacle.

Can't completely argue with that, other than that the mods could've been done a bit better (esp. the ECU tuning - anyone take a stab at that one?). Can't really argue that it's a nice package either - hey, WE bought it :) - any mods really tilt the balance further toward racecar rather than streetable car, thereby limiting their target market.

As an enthusiast, however, I agree - would be great to have more mods available from Mazda - but what would we need, really, and what could the factory really support - given that they have to warranty it and given that this engine platform may be as stressed as it can reliably be?.

Once some money becomes available or someone is willing to buy a haltech and let me tune it I will be seeing what the car can do. I think we can pull some pretty good numbers and driveability out of the car with some dyno time.

yea man what is this crap with mazda! when i bout my 2003.5 msp the salesman - (WHY DID I LISTEN - DAMN CROOKS!!!!) told me that in no time that mazda was gonna make available upgrade parts to clarify what they screwed up while tuning the car. Ive had my car since october of 2003 and there isnt even rumor as to whether or not mazda is gonna make the parts we all need! NEVER TRUST FORD OR ANY COMPANY OWNED BY FORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my opinion we should all get a full refund for our tin cans so that we can get something with some promise to it !!!! im out - TO HELL WITH MAZDA!!!!!!

What I believe happened was the following: Mazda did a very good thing in producing the MP3, critics all around praised it for its handling capabilities and "stock" sound system. However, they griped because there was not enough power. What did they do? They added a turbo to the MP3, and thus the MSP is born. That's it. Nothing more. This car was NOT designed to compete with any SRT's or any power-based specialty car out there. It was simply to make a car, the MP3, better and I believe that they have succeeded in that point.

However, in looking at the brand new Mazdaspeed MX-5, I realized that they REALLY cheaped out on the car. The MSMX5 has an all around much more solid feel and look to it. I really hope that the 3 gets the Mazdaspeed makeover, and finally stomps some SRTs into the ground. As for Mazda making performance upgrades to sell for 4000 vehicles here and in Canada, that maybe half of the owners will be interested in (so now 2000 vehicles), don't even bother wishing. It's not cost-effective and frankly, they aren't interested in making anything in-house that will lose them money. However, I know that Saturn recently OK'd a HKS muffler (I think) for use on their vehicles as a Saturn Authorized Part. This, I think, is the only way that we will get any authorized support for aftermarket mods.
