Who's left?

Hiboost will never leave its business, hes been doing this a long time before the forum was available. So his big business is not based on the forum I think.

I still run the BEGI manifold on my turbo setup. It's not the prettiest thing, but it is a beast of a mani. I don't foresee this thing having any problems for sometime. I guess that's why MPI used it when they did my kit. And MPNick will make anyone a turbo setup if they want. He just doesn't mass produce them like MAM and Hiboost do, not enough time to do that along with the other cars he does.

spool and begi were the first turbo kits to hit the scene for this car. the talk on this forum used to be much hyped "begi VS spool" which is better, lol. begi eventually turned over all marketing to Flyin Miata, who in turn formed "Flyin Protege" as a brand name to sell protege parts and turbo kits. the idea never really took off and arguably hiboost stole alot of that thunder. Flyin Protege was around for about a year until they decided to go back to strictly focusing on Miatas. terry (spool) ran into some financial woes and despite his best efforts to save the shop, it went under and was sold to a group of tuners who dropped the protege support as soon as the ink dried. the widely known "spool ITS mp3" is now owned by none other than turfburn.

wagner was never really a key player in my opinion, not on this forum. there was always talk of a wide variety of cams, exhaust components, engine parts, etc coming from them that never seemed to materialize or when they did were never backed up by any real claims. wagner had teamed up with perfworks (whom at that time was from MPI) to develop a full AEM standalone for the protege. the partnership ended with perfworks making off with many customers' money and reportedly being hauled off to jail on an unrelated charge. wagner was also participating on the WOMP supercharger project, with the results being fairly poor. very recently wagner had planned a full slate of product (mazda6 twin turbo kit, etc) and botched up a shorty header group buy before the company mysteriously shuttered its doors late last year.

the other turbo kit that came and went without so much as a flash was the Tripoint kit. the kit used an aerodyne turbocharger and was under perpetual redesign after aerodyne went bankrupt.

Nice recap and a very accurate one at that!..I will say...The community has been through a lot and continues to remain strong. Mazda models come and go...Vendors come and go...Members come and go...but rest assured this community is not going anywhere but up (in size that is!).

I'm very optimistic about the Mazda "scene" and Mazda Forums. I believe the Proteg (and related models) are slowly becoming "cult" cars that only continue to be more attractive to those looking for affordable performance. They may not be "mainstream" like civics but there are a lot of DIY's out there that have sense enough to see potential in the Proteg lineup. Models like the P5 and MP3 are finding new life as they transfer from "mainstream" owners to "enthusiast" owners looking for a sporty daily driver and or budget project car...even the "standard" Protegs are still attractive sporty rides.

As for the future...Look for the 2.3 to lead the way...In case you've been stuck in one the Proteg related forums all this time...Mazda Forums also represents Mazda's new generation of cars. Good news is...There is even more promise with these models.

In terms of Vendors...I've seen a lot come and go...At the end of the day only the truly experienced and "Professional" survive.

True enough! Now that MAM is no longer suspended, will you be picking up thier product line again?

Mental Addiction is not for sale. We are dropping several of our Protege products. This is do to outside lead times, fabrication times, cost and popularity.

That's not what I meant. IIRC, at one time, your kits could be purchased through ProtegeGarage. That's all I was referring to/

Can you be more specific? Which products for which models?

MPI still sells and build turbo kits along with short blocks, cylinder heads, headers, exhaust systems, intercoolers MSP turbo upgrade and we have the MPI Tuner.

We are the only full time or part time Protege vendor on this forum that does all of its all machine work and fab work in house.
