Who wants to help?

Ok, I'm gonna get ahold of my "parts guy" and tell him what I need to get a quoted price and go from there. The more help the better! Might as well dump in some of that castrol 10w-30 from this weekend too lol

Phen, I thought of the perfect analogy for my love of the FS-DE. It's like an ex-girlfriend. But you and Wes HATE FS-DE's with a passion.

That's true. Mine is mostly budget conscious (good mpg) but other than that, she hates to exercise (rev), complains while I make her exercise (rev), and doesn't put out (no power). I guess at least she swallows, but I wish oil were cheaper... (boom02)

Ordering the parts soon. Need confirmation, so the project will be this weekend comin up or the weekend after that. Here's one thing I found:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1814078

And the timing kit:

And the water pump:

How's this look for a parts list? Anything else I'll need or other companies I should look at? Also are we gonna have to pull the motor? Or can it stay mounted in the engine bay?

Does the head kit come with sealant? You'll need some on a few spots on the VCG, but I didn't see any in the pics.

I didn't notice any either. What would I need so I could add it to the list? Loctite, sealant,etc....

I think I've seen people use RTV, but I've never done it. I'm sure the other guys that have had theirs apart will know.

You don't need that first link. That's like a complete gasket kit. You're just doing the timing belt and water pump, right? The second link had good Gates metal pulleys and a timing belt, so that's good. We shouldn't need to pull off your intake or exhaust manifolds so no gaskets needed there. Just a small tube of RTV or silicone and a valve cover gasket, like Wes said. You just need a dab in the corners where the cams are. And possibly a water pump gasket, I'm not sure if it requires one or not.

So timing belt and water pump links are cool, get a water pump gasket, and what should I look at for the head gasket?

Btw I was gonna do water pump, timing belt (as my car is nearing 100k), and a head gasket (bc my car needs it lol). Oil change and coolant system flush can be done after. If anyone has ramps the can bring that'd be awesome!! I have jacks and jack stands but ramps seem more practical

Oh, my bad. I forgot you were changing the head gasket. Then yes, you'll need a new one. haha. As well as new head bolts.

Have you looked through the Mazda workshop manual? It will tell you everything you need and is the best How-To out there, hands down. I research the s*** out of everything before I buy anything or even pick up a wrench. But I'm a little weird...

Lol understandable, I'll look it over, I have it downloaded on my laptop. What should I look for in a head gasket tho? There are so many different companies idk what to do lol

Just one from a reputable company, or OEM is fine.

I never changed my timing belt on my FS. Josh changed it when it was "between lovers" (before his swap). Hit him up. I was thinking about dragging him along since he's done one on an FS. I've only done it on my KL.

Did you talk to Josh about coming along? I have the finances so I'm gonna hopefully order the parts tomorrow evening when I get off work. Idk if they'll be here for this weekend but maybe set the date for next weekend? Are we gonna have to pull the motor? If so I gotta find an engine hoist...

But parts list is:
Head gasket
Valve cover gasket
Head bolts
Intake and exhaust manifold (just in case) gaskets
Water pump and gasket
Timing belt kit
Tube of RTV

Anything else I'm forgetting?

So are we gonna have to pull the motor out? If so I do not have a hoist so Evan it would probably be easier to do it at your place. Just a thought...

So did you get the parts yet? What day were you thinking about doing this?

Honestly dude, I was planning on just coming over to help for a few hours. I don't want another car to work on here at our place. I hope you understand. But yeah, you don't need the hoist. Are you going to check to make sure the head isn't warped while it's off or just put a new gasket on it and wrap it up?

And that big ass gasket kit might be the way to go afterall.

Will- I was busy all weekend with work and school so I'm ordering them tonite bc I'm off at 6.
Thanks phen!
Evan, it's cool I was just saying if we had to pull the motor. I'm not gonna worry about checkin to see if it's warped. I never let the car run hot enough to have a chance for it. Just pull everything off, swap the gasket, if sean comes along then maybe he could help with the timing belt and water pump. I don't wanna take advantage of you guys helpin me out so I don't wanna hold y'all up on a weekend too much.
