whistling noise when driving

Possibly though your ride does not have a roof rack, the tracks where they go can not be pressed in well enough causing whistles. However, the acceleration gig leads me to steer away from roof rack stuff. Its worth checking.
Also, Alternator...how about backing up on that one...Belts? Have they stretched? Mazda had a bad batch of belts for a while that would stretch. Bad belts=stretch=loose=Squeal/whine.
.Just check for fun.
Good luck.

Oh, and forgive me...One more possibility.
If an intakehas been added, and it isnt mounted in a pretty stable position, you can get some rubbing and whistling. Can you 'Locate' the noise? That may have already been asked, but I am tired, and kind of bounced around on this Thread. If it was, I apologize.
Take it easy,
J

I have this in my P5 also, mine comes from the door seals. So when you speed up it gets louder because of the faster wind moving around your car. So next time put your head up to your window and see if thats what it is.

yes

it is not alternater whine,or tranny, i have a mp3 and i have the same noise
it comes from the front center dash area at about 60 miles to 85 miles per hour
it is intermident and it sounds like a low midrange whistling that cuts in and out,
i have had that noise for a while, do you all wanna know what it is, im sure you do. when i find out i will let you all know, my service dep heard nothing cause it only happens once i a while, so i am in the process of removing my dash board to pinpoint the sound
i have turned off the radio and mine is a alpine dva-7996,not stock so you can iliminate the stereo cause the noise is there even on or off. i turned on my fan to differetn speeds to see if it changes and it dont, so i eliminated ac and blower fan. so ill keep you all posted.

Hey... I get a whistling noise to(group). It seem to becoming from the center dash area and it starts around 60-80mph. It gets a little louder the faster I go. Snce I'm the driver I can't really find the sound. I think is where the front windsheild meets the dash. Theres foam there and It could just be an air leak. I got some auto foam from Home Depot and I'm going to see if I can put some there and see what happens.

it's the alternator

I have a protege LX 2003 automatic
I was told by the dealer and beleive it, it's the alternator.
They say it's normal but it's getting on my nerve and also
I beleive the electromagnetic field of the alternator is giving me a lot of trouble with my hamradio in reception, or could it be the spark plugs, oh well
this is another topic but I find this car one of the worst for noise and EMF
probelms I tried a lot of things but nothing seems to work.
I noticed this noise the first day and I find it very noticeable
It's not a wind deflector or the radio causing this it's doing it even when parked and sometimes in parking lot I hear it from other protege as well, that is being outside of the car of course, yep from under the hood.
It's a high pitch noise that goes higher when RPM is higher

If anybody have a fix I'd be more than glad to hear it...

Boy does this thread bring back some baaadd memories... BTW, this is a TSB in the states (http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/tsb/; #MT000002993), and sorry in advance for the long post.

My first P5 was an auto, and about 3 months after I got the car, I started to hear a high-pitched whine (kind of sounded like your ears ringing) when I was going between 112kph and 124kph or so, or around 75mph for all of you in the states. Whenever I was maintaining speed or accelerating in that speed range, the sound was there or would increase in volume and pitch slightly, but as soon as I took my foot off the gas it was gone literally. This would happen no matter what the road/weather conditions, and because I could always affect it with the accelerator when I was traveling at those speeds (it's not related to rpm, overdrive, cruise, etc in any way, shape or form - believe me, I did the whole process of elimination thing), I knew it was NOT wind noise. Plus, it was there and exactly the same both before and after I put my intake in.

It started out very quietly and intermittently at first, but over the next year it got to the point that you could hear it with the moonroof open, the stereo on (at a reasonable volume) and with the road noise that you'd expect to get in an economy car like ours - the whine was pretty much as loud as you would talk during a regular conversation. I brought this up with my dealership and they were certain it was the differential that was causing the problem. I got lucky in that the service manager at the dealership went to bat for me and did get me a new tranny, but this did absolutely NOTHING. It was there just as bad as before the new tranny. Plus, it started happening at around 60-70kph (45 mph), exactly how it started at the higher speed.

I ended up trading in that P5 for an identical one, but with a manual tranny (oh happy day), and I haven't had a problem with this one at all. Now, shortly after I did trade in the auto for the manual, a friend who's an army mechanic told me it was the harmonic balancer that was the problem, not anything in the tranny. Obviously, I never got a chance to test his theory, but it may be something for those of you with this problem to try.

Sorry to scare you with my tale of woe, and good luck. If the harmonic balancer thing ends up fixing it, I sure would like to know, just for interest's sake.

I think this topic has been covered before but I can't find it in the search. I have an automatic 2003 P5 and since day one I have noticed a whistling sound when driving. You have to be on a quiet road to hear it. I first noticed it when driving home late at night on a country road....second day I owned the car! Just a quiet whistling sound...anyone else hear this?

Not reading 5 pages for this but....

Have you tried cleaning where the windows contact the seals as well as cleaning the seals?

You would be surprised how quiet your car will be after doing so.
