Which shifter is better?

Which shifter would you suggest? The twm or the Kartboy? Also will the Kartboy shift bushing work with the twm if I decided on the twm shifter?

OK
It is now between:
1. B&M
2. SR Motorsports
3. TWM
4. Kartboy

However, I would still like to know if the bushings by Kartboy are compatible with all of these shifters.

yes...the bushings are compatibale with ALL the shifters...seeing as how they are at the OTHER end of the shift rod.....

as far as which is better....I think its mostly personal preference....and your depth of wallet. not all the shifters have the exact same lengths...thus they shorten the throws in differing ammounts....but they are close....and ALL are a drastic improvement over stock.

Correction:

Heheheh, ... not often you get to correct Sir Nuke.

The Bushing goes on the other end of the OTHER (support?) rod, not the shifter rod itself.

...which is attached to the other end of the shift rod. Sheesh! Splitting hairs here...

Anyway, I believe the percentage difference from stock to the particular shifter is the key. As Nuke mentioned, personal preference is the indicative factor. I would like to be able to drive with each of the shifters, to find out which one was the best for my particular taste.

Did I hear someone say "car meet"? :D

Let me see if I get this correct, ...

B&M: 1" drop (for P5) - 42% throw reduction
Kartboy: 2" drop (for P5) - 35% throw reduction

Having played with both (I have a friend with MP3+B&M, and one with P5+Kartboy) here are my feelings

They both feel about the same in terms of "tightness", my friend with the P5 says the Kartboy is a bit harder to push

In My opinion, the B&M was a little too short a throw. My mind kept telling my hand that I needed to go a bit further.

The Kartboy was nice, in that it was more of a "expect to need to push farther", but is already in place.

I don't know if that makes sense.

In other terms,
B&M: I wanted to push it further
Kartboy: I thought I wanted to push it further, but it was right where it should be.

Actually, if you get under the car, there are two separate rods. One actually changes the gears, the other just connects the transmission to the shift housing (?).

The shifter bushing goes on the latter of the two rods. Has nothing to do with the shifter rod itself (the shifter rod is what connects the shortshifter to the transmission)..

Thanks, ArkosP5! This is exactly the sort of thing we need! Has anyone else tried more than one? Please share your impressions and personal opinions. The descriptions ArkosP5 used really addressed both subjective and physical differences.

Hey, you're right! Thanks for the clarification. Your prestidigitation is obviously based upon an erudition of automotive proficiency. :D

MP3 Short Shifter

Since I've been reading how MP3 shift knob is threaded differently than the P5 or any other shifter threads I wanted to look into a short shifter that would use the original MP3 shift knob thread without modification.

Looking at TWM's short shifter, I see pictures that shows they fitted the original MP3 shift knob. So it works? What do you think?

TWM's MP3/P5/Protege Short Shifter Pictures

No one confirmed if Kartboy's short shifter works with MP3 thread, and B&M's short shifter doesn't work with MP3's original shift knob, correct?

Thanks!

MP3 knob won't work

Both the B&M AND the Kartboy shifters are 10mm x 1.25 pitch thread. This fits the Protege5, but does NOT fit the MP3 stock knob. It is however the same size as the miatas (don't know which model/years), so there's quite a few out there.

So does anyone have the actual lengths/size (whichever you prefer to call it) for all of them? ya know, like how much shorter than the MP5 stock one is...

B&M = ???
Kartboy = ???
SRM = ???
TWM = ???

Thanks

:D

they have two different part numbers for the protege/protege5 and the mp3 shifters. the mp3 thread is a 12mm and the protege is a 10mm.

This guy is well-respected in the Miata community, one of the best engravers out there. If you're looking for custom knobs to go on top of those short shifters, this is the guy to see. Many, many happy customers, as I'm sure Nate can verify :)

Crap! I just ordered the kartboy shifter combo today hoping that the thread for the mp3 knob would be the same. Now I have to find another knob. This sucks!!!!
